Above the chest stretch
Standing or seated, clasp your fingers behind the head. Reach your arms up above your head by bending your elbows. Slowly squeeze your shoulder blades together, then move your elbows and hands backwards. To emphasize the shoulder area you are stretching, change the position of your hands. Repeat this process 3 to 5 more times.
Neck release
Slowly lower your head to the chest while sitting straight up in a chair. This will allow you to feel a stretch in your back. To stretch your right shoulder, lean your head to your left. You can repeat the same stretch in the reverse direction. For one minute, hold each side of the stretch. To help you relax, take a deep breath and stretch. For each side, repeat the stretching 3 to 5 more times.
Chest expansion
Place an exercise band, belt, or tie behind your back. Grab it with both of your hands. As you hold the band, lift your chin towards the sky by bringing your shoulder blades together. Hold the band for between 10 and 15 seconds. This exercise can be repeated 3 to 5 more times.
90 shoulder stretch
Stand in front of a doorway and raise your arms so that your elbows are at 90 degrees to your body. Place one hand on each side of the door frame. Stand straight with one foot in front, keeping your neck aligned with your spine. Brace your back against the door frame by leaning forward. Continue the stretch for 30-seconds and then repeat it 3 to 5 more times.
Shoulder rings
A great warm-up exercise is to do shoulder circles. Stand with your right arm on the back of a chair and allow your left hand to hang down. Your left hand should be circled 5 times in each direction. Repeat the process with your opposite arm three to five times.
These simple exercises can be added to your daily routine to help relieve pain and relax the shoulders muscles. Before beginning any exercise program, it is important to consult your physician.
