The CDC has published a statement on COVID-19, but many alternative and holistic medicine organizations have their own guidelines. The British Holistic Medicine Community has created a resource list, and the St. Louis Institute for Functional Medicine has issued guidelines for patients to follow. If you have been diagnosed with COVID, there are many ways to combat the virus.
Chinese herbal medicine
A pilot project to use Chinese herbal medicine to support frontline workers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been launched in the UK by a team of herbal medicine practitioners. The project, called Jade Screen, has raised funds to supply free immune enhancing herbal formulae and anti-viral medicines to healthcare workers in the frontline.
The researchers searched for randomized and quasi-randomized trials that included Chinese herbal medicines and Western medicines, and limited the search to studies published between 2002 and 2006. They found eight studies that were not randomized and sixteen of which showed efficacy. However, the quality of evidence was considered low. Chinese herbal medicine is credited with helping the Chinese population combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early-stage COVID-19 patients exhibit symptoms that reflect a heat or cold imbalance in the lungs. A top herbal remedy for this stage is Kuxingren. Those in the middle stage can take Houpo or Baidoukou.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an effective treatment for Long Covid, which can improve a person’s quality of life and health. Although the specific causes of the disease have not been studied extensively, acupuncture triggers the body’s own healing abilities, improving digestive and immune functions and boosting mental health. Acupuncture treatments are also minimally invasive and free of side effects.
In addition to treating patients for acute conditions, acupuncture is also used to treat chronic conditions caused by the disease. In a hospital setting in Brazil, acupuncturists used it to treat workers with the disease. In addition, acupuncture helped individuals who experienced psychiatric problems caused by the pandemic.
Research shows that acupuncture combined with herbal medicine is an effective treatment for COVID-19. In one study, patients with severe COVID-19 improved significantly with acupuncture and herbal medicine. The acupuncture treatments were successful in reducing symptoms and improving lung functions. The results were confirmed with CT scans.
Self-management strategies
Self-management strategies are a vital part of coping with a health emergency, especially during pandemics like COVID. These strategies include using herbal remedies, dietary supplements, and self-help techniques. Among these strategies, the use of vitamins and minerals was most common. Researchers also found a correlation between these strategies and the level of worry about the disease.
Most patients considered their healthcare professionals an important source of information and guidance, but some would prefer to self-manage the condition on their own. In some groups, the lack of time allowed for self-management was a major barrier, especially among female focus groups. Other participants found that the availability of public facilities was important.
However, there is no single theory that accounts for all health-related behaviour of bronchiectasis patients. This study supports several concepts and suggests that there may be a large amount of variation in the outcome of self-management programmes. Therefore, it is important to establish a framework for assessment of these programmes.
