Medical treatment is essential for people suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS). But the prescribed drugs may not be enough, and the disease may worsen if prescribed treatments are not successful. This is where alternative medicine comes in. Not only does it help those with MS, but it is also effective for a variety of other conditions.
Red light therapy
Red light therapy is a promising alternative to conventional MS treatment. Researchers have shown that it can significantly reduce the pain experienced by individuals with MS. Besides relieving pain, red light therapy has a variety of additional benefits. Studies have shown that RLT can improve mental acuity, improve inflammation and improve muscle recovery.
Massage
Acupuncture is an alternative medicine that has been shown to relieve the symptoms of MS. It works by inserting thin metallic needles into specific points on the body. These points influence energy flow within the body. During a treatment, four to twelve points are stimulated.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Studies have suggested that hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, may be a helpful alternative treatment for MS. Many people suffering from MS have said that it has improved their symptoms and quality of life. Many patients also say that the treatment has improved their bladder control, gait, and pain relief. However, in order to experience these benefits, hyperbaric oxygen therapy must be used on a regular basis. While no one knows what exactly happens during the treatment, experts believe that increased oxygen levels in the brain may increase the speed of tissue repair and inhibit the activity of immune cells.
Microbead-based array technologies
Microbead-based array technologies offer an alternative approach to treating MS. By varying the number of beads and the constraint of the PDMS ring, microbead-based arrays offer more control over structure parameters. Further, these microarrays can be pre-treated with molecules or adhesion factors that confer additional features such as guided axonal growth or controlled release of drugs. These technologies can also be used for hiPSC differentiation to produce homogenous populations of cells.
Siponimod
Siponimod, a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor agonist, has shown promising results in several trials. Although the effects of siponimod on MS are still unknown, this medication may reduce the relapse rate in patients with SPMS or RRMS. The treatment also reduces the number of people who experience disability worsening. However, more studies are needed to fully understand the effects of siponimod on different subtypes of MS.
