There are several alternative treatments for eosinophilic oesophagitis that are effective and safe. These include a Naturopathic approach, Empiric elimination diet, and Curcumin. These treatments are effective but are not without side effects.
Naturopathic treatment
Eosinophilic esophatitis (EoE) is a chronic, inflammatory disorder that is often associated with allergies. Symptoms can be similar to those of other autoimmune diseases, such as asthma, but they are often caused by a specific food allergy. Symptoms can begin as early as infancy and can last for years.
Symptoms of EOE include difficulty swallowing and esophageal inflammation. A Naturopathic Doctor can help patients overcome these symptoms by reducing inflammation in the esophagus and regulating the immune system. Naturopathic treatments include the use of natural supplements that can help reduce inflammation and support the esophagus.
Currently, there is no drug that has been approved by the FDA for eosinophilic oesophagitis, but medications such as antacids and proton pump inhibitors are sometimes prescribed. Both of these medications can reduce inflammation and reduce the number of eosinophils in the esophagus.
Empiric elimination diets
Dietary therapy has been proven to prevent esophageal inflammation, and it is becoming a popular alternative treatment for EoE. Additionally, it has fewer side effects and is cheaper than pharmaceutical treatments. A Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, Jeffrey Alexander, has presented his findings on the efficacy of empiric elimination diets in the treatment of EoE.
In a small randomized controlled trial, a four-food elimination diet (FED) was shown to reduce eosinophil counts more than PPI alone. Additionally, patients who followed the four-food diet achieved histological remission at a greater rate than those on PPI alone.
In the study, patients with EoE were reintroduced to food groups over a period of 6 weeks. The diets were designed to start with the two most common food triggers, such as milk and gluten. After the 6-week reintroduction, endoscopic evaluations were repeated to assess symptomatic improvement. Those foods with low eosinophil counts were considered to be well tolerated. In contrast, those with high inflammation were considered triggers of EoE.
Curcumin treatment
Curcumin is an important anti-inflammatory agent. This antioxidant has been shown to inhibit inflammatory cytokines in human esophageal tissue. Further, curcumin has been shown to inhibit bile-reflux-induced gastric lesions in rats. In addition, curcumin protects against oxidative stress by maintaining antioxidative activity.
Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties have been demonstrated in a small number of studies. In one such study, a curcumin-zinc complex protected the gastric mucosa from gastric ulceration. In addition, the compound inhibited gastric acid secretion in rats who had undergone pylorus ligation. It also protected against indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration.
Curcumin is not a cure for eosinophilic oesophagitis, but it can reduce inflammation. It is often used as a preventative medication. Some studies have shown that curcumin is superior to proton pump inhibitors. Curcumin is a natural, plant-based treatment that may have a positive impact on this chronic inflammatory disorder.
