While conventional medicines are an option for treating syphilis, they may not always be effective. There are a variety of alternative treatments that can be used instead. You may want to explore studies at the Mayo Clinic and other research centers to find the best method for you. Some of these studies are examining new treatments, interventions, and tests that have not yet been tested by medical professionals.
Doxycycline
For treating syphilis, penicillin is the first-line treatment. Penicillin G benzathine (BPG) is an intramuscular antibiotic that is highly effective in killing the syphilis bacteria. However, penicillin is expensive and cannot be covered by most health insurance plans. This can be a burden for patients who cannot afford the treatment.
The study compared the response of syphilis patients treated with penicillin with that of patients treated with doxycycline. The study also compared the response between penicillin and doxycycline in patients with HIV infection.
Penicillin G
Treatment with penicillin is the mainstay of treatment for syphilis, but penicillin G is often a good alternative for people who are allergic to the antibiotic. However, in cases of penicillin allergy, alternative treatments such as tetracycline or doxycycline may be used instead.
In one study, 328 patients with latent syphilis were randomly assigned to receive either penicillin G or azithromycin in an intramuscular injection. The authors assessed the effectiveness of penicillin G by measuring changes in the RPR titer nine months after treatment. Additionally, subjects whose lesions had epithelialized within one or two weeks of treatment were considered cured.
Other antibiotics
There are other antibiotics available for the treatment of syphilis. In fact, doxycycline is the preferred second-line treatment for syphilis. However, controlled trials are lacking to establish the effectiveness of this drug. Moreover, doxycycline may be ineffective in certain patients with underlying medical conditions.
The availability of alternative antibiotics would help expand the therapeutic options for syphilis. This would benefit patients and contribute to efforts to eradicate the disease.
Exercise
The symptoms of syphilis are different in different people. If you have the condition, you should get a proper diagnosis by having a blood test. Fortunately, it is treatable with antibiotics. However, you should not engage in sexual activity until you have received the complete course of treatment. In addition, you should consider getting HIV tested. Also, make sure to notify your sexual partners.
In the early stages of the disease, penicillin is the recommended treatment. The doctor will determine the dosage of penicillin according to the severity of the symptoms. However, you should remember that antibiotics can cause side effects if you’re allergic to them. Also, antibiotics only prevent the bacteria from causing further damage.
