One famous entertainer once stated that magic was “just spending more on something than anyone else could reasonably expect.” This was in reference to magic created in the entertainment industry. I work in an industry that is far less glamorous, the eldercare sector. When I read the quote, I smile because a client of mys once said to me, “What are your thoughts, an Alzheimer’s wizard?”
Around 1 in 9 people 65 years and older (11.7%) have Alzheimer’s.
It can be difficult to see loved ones with Alzheimer’s and feel like we are looking at someone completely different. They don’t tell us the same jokes or give us the same life advice they used to. This doesn’t mean we should stop talking to them about these topics. Rather, we should engage with them more often and with the subjects and activities they enjoy.
Alzheimer’s and dementia patients will gradually lose their cognitive function. However, most people will still be able to use some of their abilities throughout the course of the disease. It is vital to provide stimulating and enriching activities for your mental, physical and emotional health. Encourage them to try as many things as possible at their current skill level. This will encourage independence, slow down their decline, provide a daily structure, and give them a sense of self-worth, purpose, and a sense of self-worth. It includes assistance with dressing, eating, and using the bathroom. Activities can be used to help the person with Alzheimer’s return to their daily lives.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent type of dementia. According to current estimates, approximately 5.8 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and related dementias. This includes 5.6 million seniors and 200,000 younger-onset Alzheimer’s. (1)
There are many factors that influence the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. People with Alzheimer’s disease typically live for three to 11 years, although some people can survive up to 20 years. Life expectancy can be affected by the degree of impairment diagnosed. Hypertension and other vascular risk factors like hypertension can lead to a faster progression of Alzheimer’s disease. (2)
These are three tips for caregivers to help loved ones be more focused on the things they love and what is important to them.
Tip #1 Get in touch with their senses
Activities that stimulate the five senses (sight, hearing, taste and touch) can be offered. Tapping into the five senses can help to trigger memories and keep the brain active.
Tip #2 – Connect with your life’s work
To draw upon past skills and interests, you can create your own activities. Activities that are reminiscent of a person’s past occupation or position in their lives, such as being a homemaker, should be chosen. Activities should be kept short and tailored to each person’s ability. If they find the task too difficult or too overwhelming, it can cause frustration, anger, and even aggression.
Tip #3 – Be patient and have fun
Assist the person living with Alzheimer’s disease in initiating the activity. Then, offer prompts and cues to assist them. They should enjoy the process, not just the end result.
Alzheimer’s disease usually progresses slowly through three stages: early (or middle), late (or severe as it is sometimes called in medical terms). Because Alzheimer’s can affect people differently, symptoms and progression through stages may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the distinction between holistic medicine, alternative medicine and holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine addresses the whole person, including mind, body and spirit. It looks at all aspects of an individual’s health, including physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, and environmental factors often overlooked by conventional medicine. Alternative medicine can be used to treat certain conditions like asthma, allergies, arthritis, or other medical issues.
What is the distinction between holistic medicine and traditional medicines?
Traditional medicine only treats symptoms. Holistic medicine treats the entire person. Holistic medicine considers the patient as an entire person, rather than focusing on one aspect.
Traditional medicine treats specific organs and systems, such as the brain. Holistic medicine examines the whole body from the inside. It also examines the effects of lifestyle choices on overall wellbeing.
What is holistic medicine’s opposite?
Holistic medicine examines the whole person and all its aspects. Holistic medicine is based on the idea that every illness has multiple causes. It requires a combination therapy to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Doctors who practice holistic medicine believe that prevention is better than cure. They work closely with their patients to help them achieve optimal wellness.
They identify the root causes of disease and help prevent it from happening again. Holistic physicians consider the entire body and not merely the physical organs. Holistic physicians often refer to the whole being as “the Body”.
This means that they look beyond the skin and treat the body holistically. The doctor may recommend changes in diet, exercise, or lifestyle. He may also recommend meditation or yoga exercises, herbal supplementation, massage or chiropractic treatment, as well as acupuncture and other forms of alternative medicine.
What is an alternative name for medicine?
Alternative medicine is an umbrella term used to describe any approach to healing that differs significantly from conventional medical practice. Alternative medicine can take many forms, but most of them are rooted in the belief that healthcare should be rooted more in natural remedies and practices than in chemical medicines.
Alternative medicine includes acupuncture. Homeopathy, herbalism. naturopathy. osteopathic manipul. Traditional Chinese medicine. Reflexology. Shamanic healing. Prayer. Energy healing. Aromatherapy. Meditation. Chiropractic. Massage therapy. Reiki.
Many alternative practitioners claim that their treatments result in better health outcomes. This includes a lower risk of developing side effects and higher patient satisfaction. These claims can’t be supported scientifically, as mainstream medical authorities have mostly ignored the evidence-based advantages of alternative medicine.
What Is Alternative Medicine?
It is a healing approach that focuses on prevention instead of treating. It encourages people become educated consumers who are actively involved in improving their overall health and well-being.
Alternative medicine refers to any system of diagnosis and treatment that does not employ allopathic (conventional) medical practices.
What is the difference between alternative medicine and complementary medicine?
Alternative medicine refers to treatments not considered conventional by mainstream medical professionals but have been shown to provide benefits for certain conditions. Some examples include homeopathy and aromatherapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, Ayurveda (TCM), traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, and traditional Chinese medicine. Complementary medicines refer to those therapies which complement conventional treatment; they may be used alongside conventional medicine. These include nutritional supplements like vitamins, minerals or herbs, amino acid, enzymes or probiotics.
Both forms of medicine may be used. However, most conventional doctors will not recommend them due either to insufficient evidence nor safety concerns.
There is no consensus among healthcare providers about the best approach to integrating CAM within patient care.
Many CAM techniques are based in theories that have been around since thousands of years. However, clinical trials over the past 20 years suggest that some of these therapies might work.
As an example, several studies indicate that acupuncture may relieve pain. It may also reduce nausea and vomiting that are associated with chemotherapy, according to preliminary data. Another study suggests that acupuncture can improve symptoms such as irritable intestinal syndrome, fibromyalgia chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
Some CAM methods also appear to have potential therapeutic effects on diseases like HIV/AIDS, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Experts agree that CAM can help with many ailments, even though we still have a lot to learn about its effectiveness.
People are turning to CAM practitioners more often for relief from common diseases.
Despite its popularity, many are still confused about what “alternative” and “complementary medicine is.

What are the advances and drawbacks of holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine is a form of holistic medicine that emphasizes the importance mind, body, spirit and environment in the healing process. The concept was developed by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), in the late 19th century. His first book, The Doctor’s Book of Mind Cure (in 1924), is his first. He used simple techniques, such as visualization, meditation, and even hypnosis. This treatment helped people suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, pain, insomnia, and many other diseases. This therapy can also help patients deal with their problems and improve their quality life.
Although holistic therapies have been around for a while, the lack of scientific evidence has made them less popular. Some studies show that holistic treatments can reduce symptoms such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes and heart disease.

A Brief History of Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine is a method of healing that treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. It addresses all aspects, including the physical, emotional and mental, as well as cultural, social, occupational, environmental, and cultural factors. It emphasizes prevention rather than cure and aims to prevent disease through diet, exercise, relaxation, stress management, etc.
Bastyr University was founded in Seattle, in 1972. Holistic medicine was born after Dr. Andrew Weil published “Spontaneous Healing” 1996. Dr. David Williams and Michael Murray established the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA). Today there are hundreds of holistic medical schools all around the globe, including Bastyr University. Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. Maharishi Ayurveda Institute. Pacific School of Oriental Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The World Health Organization named holistic medicine as one of five key trends in healthcare in 2013. This trend involves integrating conventional medicine with complementary therapies such acupuncture (homeopathy), herbalism, massage treatment, reiki and yoga. This integration will provide safe, effective and patient-centered care with minimal side effects.
Holistic medicine works because we have an interconnected body-mind-spirit. If any of these three elements are out of balance, illness can occur. This is an example:
Your mind can be anxious or stressed and you feel anxious. This causes you to become more tense. Cortisol is a hormone which increases inflammation. The result is fatigue, weakness, and sickness.
Negative emotions can cause you to feel anger, fear and grief. These feelings can lead to stress in the brain. If untreated, these stress hormones can trigger adrenaline and cortisol production. Adrenaline stimulates your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Cortisol impacts your immune system as well as your digestive tract and nervous system. Both hormones cause fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and other health problems.
You can lose your faith and hope in life if you feel depressed. You may also lack self-esteem and confidence. This can lead you to poor eating habits and unhealthy relationships. It can also cause low energy. You feel happy, joyful, peaceful, and optimistic when your spirit is healthy.
Differentiation between alternative and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is based upon the scientific method. Doctors use x-rays (MRIs, CAT scanners), and other technologies to diagnose patients. When necessary, they prescribe medication and perform surgery. Allopathic doctors believe that they have a complete understanding of the human body and can treat any illnesses. Alternative medicine is based on herbs, vitamins and minerals, diet, exercise as well as emotional support and spiritual healing. There is no standard definition of alternative medicine. You can call it natural medicine. Others refer to them as traditional medicine, holistic medicine, and CAM.
