Practice Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is important because it allows your digestive tract to rest and repair itself overnight. Your body will not detoxify or regenerate effectively if your digestive system is too busy digesting your midnight snack.
Fasting at night honors your circadian clock. It will give you more energy, and a clearer mind. You can then jump out of bed in the morning feeling fresh and energetic.
If you live in an area where the sun sets early, or at certain times of the calendar year, don’t eat anything after 6 pm. You will have at least 12 hour of fasting. After 40, you should aim for a 15-hour fast.
Eating Mindfully
Eat without distractions, such as TV, electronics or even talking. Distractions take energy away from digestion, and send it to the brain so that you can “digest” the information. It is best to eat in a calm, relaxed environment. You can also take 30 seconds of silence prior to eating your meal. This will help your mind switch gears and relax.
The brain uses the signals it receives from your senses in order to prepare your stomach to digest your food properly. This includes sound, touch and sight as well as smell and taste. In India, it is common to eat food with your hands to enhance the sense of touch. Your brain is distracted when you are distracted. It doesn’t receive any important sensory information, so it doesn’t prepare the gut for a meal. It also converts digestion energy into mental energy. It can lead to overeating and malabsorption, as well as indigestion.

Holistic Medicine – A Short History
Holistic medicine is a method of healing that treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. It covers all aspects of the body, including emotional, mental and spiritual as well as occupational, environmental, cultural and lifestyle influences. It promotes prevention over cure.
Bastyr University was founded in Seattle, in 1972. Holistic medicine grew after Dr. Andrew Weil’s book “Spontaneous Healing” was published in 1996. Dr. David Williams, and Dr. Michael Murray founded the American Holistic Medical Association in 1997. There are many holistic medicine schools around the world today, including Bastyr University and Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons.
The World Health Organization designated holistic medicine as one the five top trends in healthcare in 2013. This trend focuses on integrating traditional care with complementary therapies like acupuncture, homeopathy and herbalism, massage therapy (reiki), yoga, meditation, and even tai-chi. This integration is designed to deliver safe, effective, patient-centered healthcare while minimising side effects and costs.
Holistic medicine works due to the interconnectedness between our mind-body-spirit. If any of these three elements are out of balance, illness can occur. For example:
Anxiety and stress can make you anxious, causing you to feel tense or out of balance. Your body responds by producing cortisol, a hormone that increases inflammation throughout your body. You feel weak, tired, and sick as a result.
Negative emotions can cause you to feel anger, fear and grief. These feelings create stress in your brain. If this stress is not treated, your body will produce adrenaline or cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and heart rate. Cortisol affects your immune system, digestive tract, and nervous system. Both hormones cause fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and other health problems.
You can lose your faith and hope in life if you feel depressed. You may also lack self-esteem and confidence. This could lead to unhealthy eating habits, low energy, and unhealthy relationships. When your spirit is healthy, you feel happy, joyous, peaceful, and optimistic.
Differentiation between alternative and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is founded on science. Doctors use x-rays (MRIs, CAT scanners), and other technologies to diagnose patients. If necessary, doctors prescribe medications and may perform surgery. Allopathic doctors believe they understand the human body, and can prescribe medications to treat ailments. Alternative medicine includes herbs, vitamins, minerals and exercise. It also includes spiritual healing, emotional support, and diet. Alternative medicine does not have a defined definition. You can call it natural medicine. Others refer to it as traditional medicine, naturopathic medicine, and CAM.
