Vitamin C is likely the only supplement you'll take. It has been a symbol of natural health since Dr. Linus Pauling first shared his hypothesis that vitamin C, taken in high doses, could eliminate colds and cancer.
A diet lacking in fruits and vegetables can lead to a vitamin C deficiency. Did you also know that cooking food can destroy some vitamin C?
Vitamin C is a true supervitamin, even though mainstream medicine hasn't accepted these claims. Learn what vitamin C does, how to take it, and how you can experience its many benefits.
What is the effect of vitamin C on the body?
This water-soluble nutrient, which is an essential antioxidant, is also the building block for collagen. Collagen is also the primary ingredient in the formation of bones, teeth and muscles.
Vitamin C also has other benefits.
- Wound healing: Improved.
- Healthy blood vessels, gums and teeth
- Iron absorption improved
- Immune system protection against infections
- Protect yourself from cancer, eye disease, cardiovascular disease and prenatal problems
What happens if you don't consume enough vitamin C?
The human body cannot synthesize vitamin C. It's important to consume plenty of foods that contain this super vitamin.
You may suffer from:
- Wound healing impaired
- Scaly skin
- Nosebleeds
- Painful joints
- Fatigue
- The following are some of the ways to reduce your risk:
- Gingivitis is a connective tissue disorder.
- Rash
- Internal bleeding
- Scurvy
Vitamin C benefits for women
Vitamin C is especially important for women because it plays a role in collagen formation. Vitamin C is essential for women because they are more prone to collagen breakdown as a result of hormonal changes and ageing.
Vitamin C also protects cells against damage caused by free radicals that can lead to chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. These conditions may be more prevalent in women due to hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, menopause and other factors. Every woman should consume plenty of vitamin C.
Studies show that women with luteal defect can increase their fertility by increasing hormone levels. This condition is characterized as low progesterone and limited uterine growth. It is more difficult to get pregnant and maintain a healthy pregnancy when you have luteal phase defect.
According to a British Medical Journal study, vitamin C can also help reduce birth defects.
How much vitamin C do I need to take per day?
According to your age, the National Institutes of Health recommends a specific vitamin C dose.
- Birth to 6 months 40 mg
- Infants 7-12 Months 50 mg
- Children aged 1-3 years 15 mg
- Children aged 4-8 years 25mg
- Children aged 9-13 years 45mg
- Teens (boys aged 14-18) 75 mg
- Girls aged 14-18 (65 mg)
- Adults (mens) 90 mg
- Adults (women 75 mg)
- Pregnant women 85mg
- Breastfeeding Teens 115 mg
- Breastfeeding women 120 mg
The NIH suggests smokers take an extra 35 mg of antioxidants per day, although quitting smoking would be the best option. It wouldn't harm to take 400 mg or more per day. Linus Pauling lived to 93 years old.
To ensure that your body absorbs the maximum amount of vitamin C possible, split your doses and eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C throughout the day.
Can you get too much vitamin C?
Although it is not usually dangerous, taking too much vitamin C can be a problem. Vitamin C intake is generally limited to 2,000mg per day. More than this amount can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting and heartburn.
Despite the fact that the body only needs a small amount of vitamin C, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the CDC revealed that 7 percent of US adults were deficient and 22 percent were marginally deficient. There are many great sources of Vitamin C that can help us get back on track.
Where can I buy vitamin C?
Citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and grapefruit are rich in vitamin C. You can find high levels of vitamin C in:
- Strawberries
- Bell peppers
- Tomatoes
- Cruciferous vegetables such as brussel sprouts and cauliflower, broccoli, spinach
You can get vitamin C from some cereals, but the best way to get it is by eating raw fruits and vegetables. Microwaving or steaming will also reduce the concentration of vitamin C (or any other vitamin for that matter).
Vitamin C can be obtained through supplements, such as tablets, capsules or even gummies. Choose your vitamins carefully. Some supplements are almost 90% synthetic, meaning they were created in a laboratory artificially. The body cannot absorb them. Some evidence suggests that a synthetic form of vitamin C may actually be harmful and increase the risk of cancer.
In an ideal world, everyone could meet the minimum requirements for all vitamins and mineral. Unfortunately, that is not true. Supplements are the best option if you do not have access to a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. Do your research prior to making a purchase.
Combine your vitamin C sources
You can eat more fruits and vegetables if you change the way that you do. The summer is the perfect time to juice or make smoothies. You can also enjoy healthy flavors by eating fresh salads, vegetable platters or yogurt with fruit.

Holistic Medicine–A Brief History
Holistic medicine focuses on the whole person and not just their symptoms. It covers all aspects of the body, including emotional, mental and spiritual as well as occupational, environmental, cultural and lifestyle influences. It is a way to prevent illness through diet, exercise or stress management.
Bastyr University established the first holistic school of medicine in Seattle in 1972. Holistic medicine grew after Dr. Andrew Weil's book “Spontaneous Healing” was published in 1996. This integration aims at providing safe, effective, patient centered care while minimizing costs and side effects.
Holistic medicine is based on the interconnectedness and harmony of the body, mind, spirit. If any of these three elements are out of balance, illness can occur. Take, for example:
Anxiety and stress can make you anxious, causing you to feel tense or out of balance. Cortisol is a hormone which increases inflammation. The result is fatigue, weakness, and sickness.
Negative emotions can cause you to feel anger, fear and grief. These feelings can lead to stress in the brain. Untreated, stress can cause your body to make adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline boosts heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. Cortisol impacts your immune system as well as your digestive tract and nervous system. Both hormones cause fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and other health problems.
A depressed spirit can lead to a loss of faith and hope. You may also lack self-esteem and confidence. This could result in poor eating habits, unhealthy relationships and low energy. Your spirit will make you feel happy, cheerful, peaceful, optimistic, and positive.
There is a difference between alternative and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is based upon the scientific method. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. If needed, they may prescribe medication or perform surgery. Allopathic doctors believe their knowledge of human anatomy and the best ways to treat diseases. Alternative medicine uses herbs, vitamins, minerals, diet, exercise, emotional support, spiritual healing, and more. Alternative medicine does not have a defined definition. You can call it natural medicine. It is also known as traditional medicine or naturopathic medicine.
