You might have already tried the feature if you’re one of millions of smartwatch owners that has a cardiac abnormality detection function. What would you do if the smartwatch detected that you had atrial fibrillation? This irregular heart rhythm disorder increases your risk of stroke. You might think that the problem is a firmware issue, incorrect reading, or a malfunctioning device if you don’t have any history of cardiovascular problems.
What if the results persist after multiple tests? And even if other people using the same watch had normal results? To determine if you should be concerned, it is best to consult your doctor. Negative results are fine. If your doctor’s tests are positive, you may be able to receive potentially lifesaving treatment.
Zsolt Varga from Budapest was one of the IT professionals we interviewed. His Christmas gift of an Apple Watch correctly alerted him to a previously unknown AFib. He was able to take preventative measures and have his doctor monitor his condition before any complications arise. After being notified by their smartwatch, Mr Varga isn’t the only one who goes to the ER.
An Apple watch saved the life of an owner who suffered from internal bleeding. This was after receiving multiple notifications from the device. We read similar stories more often the more we wear such devices.
ECG capabilities are now embedded in increasing numbers of smartwatches and will soon be a standard feature. As sensors improve, new developments promise even more advanced features, such as core body temperature, blood pressure and blood alcohol and glucose measurement.
Smartwatch AFib detection is not without its limitations. These devices are not recommended for high-risk individuals. AFib is statistically more prevalent among watch owners than those who are older (under 45), and is most likely not financially deprived. However, it is more common among 65+ people and, due to a variety of factors, more common in those with lower incomes. These factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. AFib is more common in those with lower incomes. Access to healthcare and the quality of care can also have an impact on AFib management and diagnosis.
We can therefore conclude that many people who would benefit the most from these devices don’t have them yet – or might not be able afford them.
However, technology is not the problem, as we will show in this article. The problem is not technology, but the lack of cultural change required to make digital health more accessible. Let’s dispel the myths and realities surrounding smartwatches sending you to the hospital.
What does the research say
In the last decade, there has been a lot of progress.
A Mayo Clinic paper published a few years ago found that only 11.4% of the 264 Apple Watch users who had analysed their clinical data received clinically relevant diagnoses. The researchers explained that 7 patients had to be evaluated for a diagnosis of clinically relevant cardiovascular disease. ” Of the 15 patients with an abnormal pulse alert who presented, only one was given a clinically relevant cardiovascular diagnosis.
The findings also suggest that many users used the device in ways that were not consistent with FDA guidance. FDA guidance on abnormal pulse detection said that the feature had not been “tested for” and was not meant for people younger than 22 years. It is not recommended for patients with AFib. In their study, 8.7% of patients had atrial fibrillation, and 22% had it.
They concluded that ” The FDA and Apple should carefully consider the unintended effects of widespread direct to-consumer screening for atrial fibrillation. This could include overutilization healthcare resources due to false positive screening results or the use of screening tools by people who have not been properly studied.
New features were added to the technology over time. In 2022, the FDA approved Apple Watch’s AFib history feature. This allows adults suffering from irregular heartbeats to monitor how often they are occurring. You can also download detailed PDFs that combine all the information to share with your doctors.
There is also another interesting development. “A 2021 retrospective study of the Apple Heart Study, which was used as the basis to FDA clearance of Apple Watch’s ECG, found that the device may also be capable of identifying arrhythmias beyond AFib. Wearers who received irregular pulse notifications but weren’t later diagnosed with AFib were included in the study. Researchers found that approximately 40% of the participants were diagnosed with another form of arrhythmia.
Many will accuse the technology, or the adopters of the technology, for overburdening hospitals. The real problem lies much deeper than that.
What are the myths and realities behind smartwatch “diagnosis?”
Expectations are high when a device such as the Apple Watch is cleared by a regulatory body, like the FDA. Sometimes, however, expectations are too high. These technologies are expected to take precise measurements and leave no room for error. Digital health devices can still detect more patients, especially if they have not yet been diagnosed. The British Heart Foundation estimates that around 300 000 people with AFib are unaware of the risk in the U.K.
According to the Mayo Clinic, 11.4% of smartwatch owners have clinically relevant diagnoses. This is roughly 1 in 10 patients who are presented with a smartwatch alarm. It’s like identifying Mr. Varga’s situation and 9 false positives, but we still catch that one patient before they have a stroke. This is a win-win situation for the patient, who may have fallen through the traditional system. It’s also a win in digital health.
One might also think it’s technology that sends patients into hospitals, hence the smartwatch “diagnosis.” However, if a patient is suffering from an underlying condition, the smartwatch’s sensors can only detect what’s already there.
Prevention is better
A smartwatch, or digital health device such as a smartwatch, is still a better way to prevent complications than current methods. Unfortunately, this often means waiting for the patient’s symptoms to get worse or doing nothing. Digital health tools allow us to accurately identify patient demographics that the traditional healthcare system fails to recognize.
False positives can increase workload and resource utilisation. In the future, more patients will visit the ER after receiving alerts from smartwatches. Apple’s Apple Watch 6 was the first to include a blood oxygenation sensor. Even if there are no obvious signs, a drop in oxygen saturation (SpO2) can be a sign of an underlying respiratory condition. Although Apple didn’t seek FDA approval for the sensor, it is not unreasonable to think that users would rush to their doctors if they see an abnormal result.
As the medical knowledge about the use of such smart wearables accumulates, as more studies set out to determine the true preventive/therapeutic potential, we can declare with increasing confidence that these devices can indeed improve our health outcomes in general.
How do you deal with “smartwatch patient”?
It’s not a matter of ridicule that smartwatch users take their smartwatch readings too seriously. Instead, they need to be guided by medical professionals.
Healthcare professionals need to be open and understand these disruptive technologies. Simply making available clinical-grade sensors to patients won’t yield optimal results. It can lead to overburdening healthcare institutions, as the Mayo Clinic study has shown. However, proper guidance from medical professionals can help patients interpret smart sensor readings better, which in turn will reduce the need for unnecessary hospital visits.
These devices can be used by doctors if they are regulated. These doctors can also instruct patients on when and who to measure with the wearables. In the event of any suspicious readings, patients can share their data via the cloud with their doctor. Both can then discuss the findings via telemedicine and decide if a hospital visit might be necessary.
Therefore, it is important to address the “smartwatch patients” using these new technologies.
It involves supporting and investing in digital health technology that will facilitate the doctor-patient relationship.
We need to make a cultural shift, which is essential for digital health. In fact, it is a part of the definition of digital healthcare. Digital health will not succeed without such a change. This will lead to a split adoption with patients looking for these technologies and healthcare professionals trying to keep them away. It will not be a good thing for healthcare, as disruptive technologies can bring many benefits to the field.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does holistic mean to you?
Holistic is a holistic approach. Holistic means to see the whole picture and not just a part. It is difficult to do this because we tend to see things as individual parts.
We often think of grey as black and white. However, grey comes in a wide range of shades.
Try to look at everything from different perspectives when you work on a project. Take a look at it from every angle.
It is important to see how the pieces fit together. Is there a way for its elements to interact?
Ask yourself why you are having trouble with a particular element. Make sure to take into account the impact of every change you make.
Why is alternative medicine important
Alternative therapies are popular because they can be cheaper and more convenient than traditional treatment. Unfortunately, many patients have died as a result of side effects like allergic reactions. Other therapies might not work.
If you don’t have enough knowledge about alternative medicines, they can pose a danger. Vitamin supplements, for instance, aren’t controlled like pharmaceuticals. This makes it easy to take too many vitamins. Some alternative remedies can contain toxic chemicals, which is even worse.
Is holistic healing legitimate?
Yes and no. Yes. There are many medications that have been proven to be effective against various conditions. They won’t cure everyone. It all depends upon what you mean with “holistic.” It all depends on what you mean by “holistic.”
Some believe that holistic medicine is a newer form of medicine. This is simply not true. Even though natural remedies were used in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome by some healers, it was not scientifically proven.
Medical practitioners started to study anatomy and physiological science in the Middle Ages. This led to the development and practice of surgery, obstetrics and pharmacology. The majority of Western countries had built public hospitals by the 19th century that allowed trained doctors to offer medical care.
Today, traditional medicine is the predominant form of healthcare. Many people still prefer alternative and complementary medicine. Many people find that it works better than drugs.
For example, some people feel more relaxed after receiving massage therapy rather than taking tranquilizers. Others prefer healthy eating to prescription medication. Still, others find that regular exercise helps their bodies function at peak performance.
Who uses holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine refers to health care treating the whole person rather than treating specific symptoms. It addresses both the mental as well as physical aspects of well being.
Holistic medicine includes acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic treatment, nutritional counseling, yoga, and other complementary therapies.
People who use holistic medicine include those who have been diagnosed with cancer, heart problems, diabetes, arthritis, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, migraines, infertility, menopause, asthma, autism, and many others.
How safe are holistic medicines?
Holistic medicines can be safe as they don’t contain harmful drugs and are natural remedies that people have used for centuries.
They have been shown to cure many illnesses, such as arthritis, chronic pain, asthma, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, infertility, etc.
Millions of people worldwide suffer from various diseases and can also use holistic medicines. They include homeopathy. acupuncture. chiropractic care. herbal treatments. massage therapy. Yoga, meditation. biofeedback. Nutrition, counseling. Physical fitness. exercise. These therapies target the whole person and not just the symptoms.
What is an alternative name for medicine?
Alternative medicine is a broad term that describes any alternative approach to healing. Although there are many forms of alternative medicine, most are based on the premise that health care should be rooted in natural substances and practices rather than chemical medicines.
Alternative medicine includes acupuncture. Homeopathy, herbalism. naturopathy. osteopathic manipul. Traditional Chinese medicine. Reflexology. Shamanic healing. Prayer. Energy healing. Aromatherapy. Meditation. Chiropractic. Massage therapy. Reiki.
Alternative practitioners claim their treatments have improved health outcomes. They also claim they are more cost-effective and provide better patient satisfaction. These claims can’t be supported scientifically, as mainstream medical authorities have mostly ignored the evidence-based advantages of alternative medicine.

How To
What type of products are used for holistic medicine?
This product can be described as “natural” without necessarily being organic. They may have been grown using natural fertilizers and pesticides, but they were also processed in ways that are less harmful to human health. Some herbs, such as some that can cause allergic reactions, may need to be prepared differently depending upon their specific needs. It is more common to find herbs in grocery stores than at health food shops. The latter often contain higher levels of herbicides and fungicides.
The majority of herbal products are made from dried plants. Some people prefer to purchase them in liquid form because they are usually cheaper. However, this doesn’t mean that they are safer. Liquid herbs can lose nutrients during processing. The product may lose its original potency. Most herbal supplements are not subject to quality control before they are sold.
Most herbs and spices are added to food once it is cooked. You’ll find them in condiments like ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, barbecue sauce, soup mixes, and marinades.
Supplements are typically taken orally (by mouth). Most vitamins and mineral supplements are available as tablets. Some vitamins and minerals are also available in capsules.
Homeopathic remedies, which are highly diluted substances, can be derived from any plant, animal or mineral. They are designed to stimulate the body’s healing systems. They are “homeopathic” and do not have the same effect as regular medicines. They instead activate the body’s immune system and restore balance. Homeopathic remedies have been proven safe and effective. They are widespread in Europe, Canada Australia, New Zealand South America, Asia and Africa.
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine needles along specific meridians in your body. The practice is based upon a traditional Chinese medical theory, which states that there are energy channels through the body through which life force flows. The theory states that illness occurs when blockages occur in these channels. By stimulating certain points along the meridian lines with fine needles, energy flow is believed to be restored, and the body returns to normal functioning.
Chiropractors correct misalignments by manipulating the spine. American doctor Daniel David Palmer devised this method in 1895. He claimed he could diagnose ailments and cure diseases through manipulating the vertebrae. His methods included spinal adjustments, muscle tests and percussion.
Chiropractic has been very popular in the last few decades. Many believe that it works better for back pain than conventional medicine.
Massage therapy uses rubbing, kneading and tapping to massage muscles, joints, as well as other body parts. Massage can loosen tight muscles, relax tension and soothe sore muscles. Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports, reflexology or myofascial release are all methods used by massage therapists.
Reflexology refers to alternative medicine that uses pressure to apply pressure to specific areas of your feet and hands using thumb pads and fingers. Reflexologists claim this stimulates the body’s natural healing process.
Aromatherapy uses essential oils derived from plants to relieve stress, improve wellbeing, and increase mood. Essential oils are also therapeutic because their chemical composition can benefit health conditions ranging from headache relief to arthritis treatment. There are many types of aromatherapy, including:
Craniosacral Treatment uses gentle touch for pain relief and discomfort. Cranial refers to the skull; sacrum means “sac” in Latin, and cranial sacral therapy combines both. In this therapy, the therapist applies light pressure to various spots on the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and torso while moving her/his hands across the patient’s body.
Cupping therapy is performed by applying cups to the skin to create suction and draw out toxins. Cupping therapy can also be combined with moxibustion (burning of herbs) or acupuncture to help detoxify.
Dietary Supplements are oral or topical products containing vitamins, minerals. Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1993 regulates the FDA. Two criteria must be met before a dietary supplement can be legally sold. The first is that it must contain a dietary ingredient, which means that it must contain more than one-percent of a vitamin, mineral or herb listed on Food and Drug Administration’s Generally Recognized As Safe List. It must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices. This means it was properly manufactured.
Electrotherapy uses electricity to stimulate the nerves and muscles. TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation) is the most commonly used form of electrotherapy. The skin electrodes used to place TENS devices allow for low-level electrical pulses. These pulses activate brain receptors to block pain signals. Intermittential current therapy and magnetic field therapy are other forms of electrotherapy.
Energy healing is based on belief that each person has natural healing abilities. Additionally, our thoughts, feelings, and intentions have an effect on our physical and mental health. Modern practitioners accept that energy healing is possible, even though it has been practiced since ancient times. However, there are many layers to energy. One layer of energy is called emotional. The second layer is called mental energy. Others include psychic, spiritual and chakras. Vital, life force, prana. Kundalini, biofield. Aura, quantum fields, and prana. These energies may be connected to the entire universe, according to some. Some people claim they can heal others with the power of their mind. There is not much scientific evidence supporting energy medicine.
Energy psychology is the study and application of human emotions to physiological functions. Energy psychology is often considered an alternative for psychotherapy, as it does not focus on past events but rather on helping clients to change their behaviour. Although energy psychology does not have a particular theoretical framework, it draws from many disciplines including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), transactional analysis, interpersonal psychoanalysis and attachment theory.
