It seems like every other day, someone reaches out to us – aiming their questions at Dr. Meskó, our lead researcher – seeking career advice. Now, let’s set the record straight: doling out career guidance isn’t exactly what we do. Yet, here we are, writing this article. Why? Even though we’re not career advisors, we’re right in the thick of the digital health and healthcare AI world. From this spot, we have a good overview of what you need to get into these booming fields.
So, while we might not be career counselors, here are our two cents on which direction to take – depending on the field from where you come. Whether your background is tech-savvy, medically inclined, or somewhere in between, this article aims to share some straightforward advice to help you navigate your journey.
1. For researchers
We’ve previously published our Top 10 Research Topics To Pursue In Digital Health, where we highlighted potential pathways for researchers. Although over a year has passed since its publication, we still stand by these topics and believe they hold great opportunities for those aspiring to make a mark in digital health and healthcare AI.
Back then we defined four main pillars to determine if a topic was promising enough:
- Find a niche
- Aim for uncharted territories
- Look for ease of entry
- Seek answers to important questions
We recommended research areas like Diabetes management with wearable trackers including CGMs, or The impact of ECG smartwatches on unnecessary hospital admissions and Virtual reality (VR) therapies outside pain management and phobias among others. But these are just a few ideas, so check your desired topics against our four pillars, and follow your own path!
2. With medical background
Entering the field of digital health and healthcare AI with a medical background presents a unique advantage. Every company in this space needs medical supervision to ensure their developments meet real clinical and medical needs. But, to efficiently navigate this realm, you must understand the technology you’re working with.
It’s not about becoming a developer or data science master but grasping the technological challenges developers face when creating healthcare solutions. Linking clinical requirements and technological capabilities will significantly enhance the effectiveness of these solutions.
To this end, pursuing courses that provide insight into the intersection of medicine and technology is highly beneficial. Similarly, engaging with scientific literature on this topic can deepen your understanding, so look for papers like Dr. Meskó’s “A Short guide for medical professionals in the era of artificial intelligence,” which serves as a great starting point for medical professionals keen on navigating the healthcare AI landscape.
This approach leads you to the digital health field while also ensuring that technological innovations focus on genuine healthcare needs, resulting in patient-centered solutions.
3. With tech background
If your expertise lies in the tech realm, the key to making a meaningful impact in digital health and healthcare AI is to develop a thorough understanding of real medical, clinical, and patient needs. Developing technology for its own sake, without a clear application in the clinical world, is unlikely to stand the test of real-world healthcare challenges. Tech professionals need to grasp the medical and, most importantly, the patient perspective, should we talk about physical products, research or clinical design. We discussed these with real-life examples in detail in this paper, the common denominator is that we need to understand what patients want to improve.
The current AI revolution offers great healthcare opportunities for data scientists, or AI developers building neural networks and/or large language models (just to name a few examples). They don’t need to graduate from a medical university to connect tech advancements to practical problems to create tangible results.
Focusing on patient design and incorporating feedback from medical professionals can bridge the gap between technological potential and healthcare reality, creating solutions that are both innovative and genuinely beneficial to patients.
Engaging in patient-centered design is an excellent direction for tech professionals entering the healthcare space.
4. For those transitioning from traditional med-tech to digital health
Individuals with a background in medical technology, and especially those who exclusively develop solutions for medical professionals, face a unique transition when moving into the digital health sector. This shift requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of digital health and the ongoing paradigm shift and cultural revolution transforming the healthcare landscape.
Such a move represents a significant change, not just in technology but in mindset and application. Developing for digital health diverges from traditional medical settings in several crucial factors.
As digital health typically targets a broader user base, including patients, caregivers, and healthcare consumers, a user-friendly design and an intuitive interface accessible to non-professionals is a must. The development of digital health solutions frequently involves a diverse mix of expertise, potentially including elements from data science, user experience design, and behavioral science, beyond traditional engineering and medical expertise.
Another factor to keep in mind is the drastically different approach to data. Digital health initiatives, by definition, aim to make health data more accessible and understandable to patients, empowering them to take an active role in their health management. This is a shift from med-tech’s guarded approach to medical data. With this comes the last unique factor: field-specific challenges of data privacy and security, which are the basics of creating safe digital health spaces.
5. For biomedical engineers
Biomedical engineering stands at the crossroads of engineering and healthcare, representing a field where specialists have a firm understanding of both technology and the foundational elements of digital health.
For biomedical engineers, the likely focus for further development should be on honing their communication skills with doctors and patients alike. While they possess the technical expertise and have a grasp on the medical and patient perspectives, the ability to effectively communicate and translate complex technical concepts into actionable, understandable information for medical professionals and laypersons is paramount.
Their unique position allows them to serve as a central “communication hub” between patients, healthcare professionals, and tech teams. Ideally, this ensures that innovations align with the real-world needs of healthcare providers and patients.
We’re living in a fascinating era where fields that were once miles apart are now converging to develop health-related products and services. This convergence creates previously unseen collaborations and overlaps. Due to this, a “hodgepodge” of knowledge from different domains can become highly sought after,
Frequently Asked Questions
What is holistic medical opposite?
Holistic medicine examines the whole person and all its aspects. Holistic medicine is based on the idea that every illness has multiple causes. It requires a combination therapy to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Doctors who practice holistic medicine believe that prevention is better than cure. They partner with patients to achieve optimal wellness.
They look for the root causes of disease to prevent them from returning. Holistic physicians treat the entire body, not just its organs. They refer to the whole of being as “the entire body.”
This means that they go beyond skin care and treat the entire body holistically. The doctor may suggest changes to diet, lifestyle, and exercise. The doctor may recommend meditation, yoga, massage, acupuncture or chiropractic treatment.
What’s the Difference Between Naturopathic Medicine & Holistic Medicine.
The two main types of medicine are conventional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. Conventional medicine is based on surgery and drugs as the primary treatment. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses natural therapies such as herbs, vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat illness and promote health. The CAM is not intended to be a replacement for conventional treatment. It is meant to assist patients who wish to have control over their own healthcare and choose what is best.
Naturopathy, on one hand, can be used to complement traditional medical practices. It is a holistic approach to treating the whole body, mind, as well as the spirit. There are many different forms of naturopathy, including Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Traditional Native American Medicine, and Functional Medicine.
It is important for you to know that some CAM modalities can overlap with conventional medicine. For example, herbal remedies can be prescribed by doctors and naturopaths alike. Naturopaths, however, tend to recommend lifestyle changes rather than prescription medication.
Naturopathy is sometimes called “complementary” since it complements traditional medicine and does not replace it. Naturopaths may prescribe medication as needed.
There are some differences in naturopathic medicine from other CAM modalities.
- Naturopaths are not qualified to prescribe or diagnose medication.
- Naturopaths will work with the patient’s family medicine and may refer patients outpatients to specialists, if necessary.
- The provincial licensing boards for Naturopathic physicians regulate Naturopathic physicians, while CAM practitioners can be self-regulated.
- Naturopathy emphasizes prevention and well-being while also educating about diet and exercise.
- Naturopaths are very conscious of lifestyle factors. They emphasize nutrition, sleep and stress management as well as exercise and mental health.
- Naturopharmacists are specialists in the use and treatment of specific conditions using botanicals and minerals.
- Naturopodists receive individualized care according to the unique needs of each patient.
- Regulators such as the College of Naturopathic Physicians of Ontario license Naturopaths.
- The provincial regulatory bodies issue licenses to naturopatrists.
- Naturopaticians can be registered with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
- The College of Naturopaths of British Columbia is responsible for licensing Naturotherapists.
- Naturobiotic therapists are licensed by the United States National Board of Medical Examiners.
- The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency grants licenses to homeopaths.
- Holistic refers to the belief in all aspects of one’s life, including spiritual, physical, and emotional. Holistic doctors will consider these elements together instead of focusing only on one aspect.
What are the benefits of holistic medicine over conventional medicine?
Holistic medicine has been used by many religions and cultures for thousands years. They were based on ancient wisdom and experience.
These medicines are safe, efficient, natural, and inexpensive. Side effects are less common than with prescription drugs.
They are also beneficial for your overall health and well-being.
They can help prevent illness and improve your overall health.
They could also cure heart disease, cancer, diabetes as well arthritis and asthma.
There are hundreds of traditional medicines in the world. Each has its own benefits.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the world’s population still relies on traditional treatment methods for their injuries and illnesses.
It was reported that about half a billion people rely on traditional herbal remedies for primary healthcare.
By 2020, the global market for complementary therapy is expected to be worth $22.2 billion.
Alternative medical treatments are becoming more popular to avoid the side effects of conventional treatment.
Many people turn to complementary therapies when they do not respond to other treatment options. They may also try them before resorting to surgery or medication.
There are many reasons people choose complementary therapies.
- To improve the quality of your life
- To reduce stress levels
- For relaxation
- To ease pain
- To enhance immunity
- Supportive services for dealing with serious diseases
- To boost energy
- To control weight
- To maintain good nutrition
- To improve sleep patterns
- To treat chronic conditions
Why would people with cancer choose to use other methods?
Cancer patients face many difficulties as they try to cope with their illness. Patients may feel hopeless or helpless, and might lose all hope of recovery. Some patients may feel nausea, pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, weakness, or other symptoms.
In addition, conventional treatments are often not effective against cancer cells. Therefore, cancer patients seek other therapies, such as complementary medicine. Studies have shown that half of all cancer patients have tried alternative treatments at least once.
Some cancer patients choose complementary medicine over chemotherapy, believing it will be easier for them to manage side effects. It may be because it’s less expensive.
There are also other reasons.
Some patients believe natural remedies could prevent a return of the disease.
Many believe natural remedies can improve quality of life.
Others believe natural remedies can help reduce your risk of getting again cancer.
Natural remedies are first-line therapy for those who are concerned about side effects from chemotherapy.

What are the Advances and Shortcomings of Holistic Medicine.
Holistic medicine is a form of holistic medicine that emphasizes the importance mind, body, spirit and environment in the healing process. The concept was developed by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), in the late 19th century. His first book, The Doctor’s Book of Mind Cure (in 1924), is his first. He used simple techniques such as meditation, visualization, and hypnosis. This treatment was beneficial for people who suffer from anxiety, depressions, stress, pain, insomnia, or other illnesses. This type of therapy also helps patients to cope with their problems, and improve their quality-of-life.
While holistic therapies remain popular today, little evidence supports their effectiveness. Some studies do show that these therapies can be used to reduce chronic conditions like arthritis, cancer and heart disease.
These are the highlights and pitfalls of holistic medicine:
- Lack of scientific evidence. The benefits of holistic therapies can only be evaluated in a small number of well-designed, randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Positive results are the norm in most observational studies.
- Traditional medicine has a higher cost. Alternative medicines are often cheaper than conventional ones, especially if the patient follows an organic diet.
- Patients do NOT feel pressured or compelled to follow prescribed protocols.
- Many doctors recommend complementary treatment, but they don’t prescribe them.
- Holistic treatments are often combined with conventional medicine. For example, acupuncture can be used in conjunction with surgery or medication.

Holistic Medicine–A Brief History
Holistic medicine focuses on the whole person and not just their symptoms. It covers all aspects of the body, including emotional, mental and spiritual as well as occupational, environmental, cultural and lifestyle influences. Prevention is more important than treatment and it focuses on preventing disease through diet, exercise and relaxation.
Bastyr University established the first holistic school of medicine in Seattle in 1972. After Dr. Andrew Weil’s 1996 book, “Spontaneous Healing”, holistic medicine started to flourish. Dr. David Williams and Michael Murray established the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA). Today there are hundreds of holistic medical schools all around the globe, including Bastyr University. Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. Maharishi Ayurveda Institute. Pacific School of Oriental Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The World Health Organization named holistic medicine as one of five key trends in healthcare in 2013. This trend involves integrating conventional medicine with complementary therapies such acupuncture (homeopathy), herbalism, massage treatment, reiki and yoga. This integration will provide safe, effective and patient-centered care with minimal side effects.
Holistic medicine is based on the interconnectedness and harmony of the body, mind, spirit. Instability can result in illness if any of these parts is not in balance. For example:
Anxiety and stress can make you anxious, causing you to feel tense or out of balance. Your body reacts by making cortisol. This hormone increases inflammation throughout your body. The result is fatigue, weakness, and sickness.
Negative emotions can cause you to feel anger, fear and grief. These feelings cause stress in your brain. Untreated, stress can cause your body to make adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline stimulates your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Cortisol is a hormone that affects your immune, digestive, and nervous systems. Both hormones can lead to fatigue, muscle tension headaches and dizziness, anxiety, depression, and other health issues.
If your spirit is low, it can cause you to lose faith in yourself and your ability to see the good in others. It is possible to lack self-esteem or confidence. This could result in poor eating habits, unhealthy relationships and low energy. You feel happy, joyful, peaceful, and optimistic when your spirit is healthy.
The difference between alternative medicine and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is based on the scientific method. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. They prescribe medications for treatment and surgery when needed. Allopathic doctors believe their knowledge of human anatomy and the best ways to treat diseases. Alternative medicine is based on herbs, vitamins and minerals, diet, exercise as well as emotional support and spiritual healing. Alternative medicine is not defined in a standard way. Some people call it natural medicine, integrative medicine, and complementary medicine. Others refer to it as traditional medicine, naturopathic medicine, and CAM.
