National Diabetes Month is November. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reminds those with diabetes and those who prepare food for them about the importance food safety in preventing foodborne illnesses.
Free booklet on Food Safety for People with Diabetes explains how to prepare and select foods safely for diabetics.
Diabetes and Food Safety
Food safety is important because diabetes affects the functioning of many organs and body systems, making people with the disease more vulnerable to pathogens and infections that can cause foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses can cause diabetes patients to be hospitalized, have a longer illness or even die. Food choices and safe handling of food are crucial in managing diabetes.
Choose Food Wisely
Certain foods can be more dangerous for diabetics because they contain more harmful bacteria and viruses. These foods are generally divided into two categories.
- Fresh fruits and vegetables that are not cooked.
- Among the animal products that are prohibited by law include unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, raw eggs, meats, poultry, shellfish, and fish, as well as luncheon meats, hot dogs improperly heated, and seafood, ham or chicken salads.
Food Safety: Four Steps to Follow
Follow these steps if you are diabetic or preparing food for someone with diabetes.
- CLEAN : Wash your hands and surfaces frequently. Bacteria are spread in the kitchen on hands, cutting boards and utensils. They can also get onto food and counter tops.
- Separate:Keep away raw meat, poultry and eggs as well as seafood, along with their juices, from foods that are ready to eat.
- COOK :to temperatures that are safe. Use a thermometer to check that meat, poultry and seafood products, as well as eggs, are cooked to the safest minimum temperature. This will destroy harmful bacteria. Charts of safe minimum internal temperatures.
- CHILL :foods immediately. Cold temperatures can slow down the growth of bacteria that are harmful. Use an appliance temperature to ensure that the temperature of the refrigerator is below 40 degrees F and the temperature of the freezer is below 0 degrees F.
Know the symptoms
In general, consuming dangerous bacteria in food will cause sickness within 1 to 3 day. Sickness can occur as soon as 20 minutes after consuming the food or even up to six weeks later. Foodborne illnesses can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and flu-like (fever, headaches, and body pain) symptoms.
Take Action
Contact your healthcare provider if you suspect that you or someone in your family has an illness caused by food.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the alternative to holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine is a way to approach health care that takes into account all aspects of the body, as well as its spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. Holistic medicine is based on the idea that every illness has multiple causes. It requires a combination therapy to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Holistic medicine practitioners believe prevention is better that cure. They are able to work closely with patients in order to ensure optimal wellness.
They are trained to spot the root causes and prevent future disease. Holistic physicians consider the entire body and not merely the physical organs. Holistic physicians often refer to the whole being as “the Body”.
This means that they go beyond skin care and treat the entire body holistically. The doctor may suggest changes to diet, lifestyle, and exercise. He may also suggest meditation or yoga exercises, herbal supplements, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, or other forms of alternative medicine.
What is complementary medicine?
Complementary Medicine can be described as any treatment that is complementary to mainstream medicine. It covers therapies such as acupuncture.
Complementary medications are not to be used as an alternative to conventional medicine. They're also sometimes called “alternative” or “integrative” medicine because they integrate Western scientific methods with other approaches that have been proven effective in healing people.

What is the difference between Naturopathic and Holistic Medicine?
The two main types of medicine are conventional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. Conventional medicine relies heavily on drugs and surgery to treat its patients. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses natural therapies such as herbs, vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat illness and promote health. CAM is not considered a substitute for conventional treatment but rather an addition to helping patients who want to take control of their healthcare by choosing what they believe is most appropriate.
Naturopathy on the other side is meant to be used in conjunction with conventional medical procedures. It treats the whole person, including mind and soul. There are many different forms of naturopathy, including Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Traditional Native American Medicine, and Functional Medicine.
It is important for you to know that some CAM modalities can overlap with conventional medicine. Both doctors and Naturopaths can prescribe herbal remedies. However, naturopaths prefer lifestyle changes to prescription medications.
Naturopathy is often called “complementary” or “complementary”, because it works with traditional medicine rather than replacing it. Naturopaths can prescribe medication when necessary.
There are some differences in naturopathic medicine from other CAM modalities.
- Naturopaths don't usually prescribe medication.
- Naturopaths will work with the patient's family medicine and may refer patients outpatients to specialists, if necessary.
- Naturopathic physicians are licensed by their respective provinces, while CAM practitioners are selfregulated.
- Naturopathy stresses prevention and wellness, while offering education on diet and exercise.
- Naturopaths strongly emphasize lifestyle factors, which include nutrition, sleep, stress management, exercise, and mental well-being.
- Naturopharmacists can use botanicals and mineral to treat specific conditions.
- Naturopodists are skilled in providing personalized care that meets the needs of each patient.
- Naturopaths are licensed by regulatory bodies like the College of Naturopathic Physicians of Ontario.
- The provincial regulatory bodies issue licenses to naturopatrists.
- Naturopaticians are registered with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
- The College of Naturopaths of British Columbia has licensed Naturotherapists.
- The United States National Board of Medical Examiners licenses Naturobiotic therapists.
- The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency grants licenses to homeopaths.
- The term “holistic” refers to the belief that all aspects of life – physical, emotional, spiritual, and social – should be considered when making decisions about one's health. Holistic doctors will consider these elements together instead of focusing only on one aspect.

What is it that a holistic doctor does that a conventional doctor doesn't do?
A holistic doctor is able to provide more services than traditional doctors, such as nutritionists, massage therapists and naturopaths.

This approach helps them identify underlying causes and work towards long-term wellness and preventative measures. Holistic doctors combine conventional medicine with natural remedies like essential oils and herbs to treat illness.
