Many families still refer to dressing as stuffing, even though technically it’s not stuffed inside the bird. This misnaming tradition has been around for ages.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the Difference Between Naturopathic Medicine & Holistic Medicine.
The two main types of medicine are conventional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. Conventional medicine is based on surgery and drugs as the primary treatment. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses natural therapies such as herbs, vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat illness and promote health. CAM should not be considered as a replacement for traditional treatment. Instead, CAM can help patients take control of their health by helping them choose the best option.
Naturopathy on the other side is meant to be used in conjunction with conventional medical procedures. It addresses the whole body and mind as well as the soul. There are many forms of naturopathy: Ayurveda and Traditional Native American Medicine as well as Functional Medicine.
It is important to note that some CAM modalities overlap with conventional medicine. Both doctors and Naturopaths can prescribe herbal remedies. But, naturopaths are more concerned with lifestyle changes than prescribing medications.
Naturopathy is sometimes called “complementary” as it works in conjunction with conventional medicine and not to replace it. Naturopaths could prescribe medication, if needed.
There are some differences in naturopathic medicine from other CAM modalities.
- Naturopaths do not usually prescribe medication or diagnose illnesses.
- Naturopaths are able to work closely with patients’ family physicians and refer them to specialists when necessary.
- Naturopathic physicians are regulated by provincial licensing boards, whereas CAM practitioners are self-regulated.
- Naturopathy emphasizes prevention, wellness, and education about diet & exercise.
- Naturopaths are very conscious of lifestyle factors. They emphasize nutrition, sleep and stress management as well as exercise and mental health.
- Naturopharmacists specialize in the use of botanicals and minerals to treat specific conditions.
- Naturopodists receive individualized care according to the unique needs of each patient.
- The College of Naturopathic Physicians of Ontario issues licenses for Naturopaths.
- Naturopatrists are licensed by provincial regulatory bodies.
- The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors has registered Naturopaticians.
- The College of Naturopaths of British Columbia has licensed Naturotherapists.
- The United States National Board of Medical Examiners licenses Naturobiotic therapists.
- The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency grants licenses to homeopaths.
- The concept of “holistic” is a belief that all aspects – spiritual, emotional, and social – should be considered when making decisions regarding one’s health. Holistic doctors will take into account all aspects of life, rather than focusing on one.
Who uses alternative medicine?
People use alternative medicine for many reasons:
- They seek to avoid dangerous drugs and surgeries.
- They believe natural remedies work better.
- They prefer non-invasive treatments.
- They want to spend less money.
- They feel more at ease using natural products
- They want greater control over their own healthcare decisions.
- They are willing to take responsibility and be responsible for their own health.
- They want a healthier environment around them.
- They seek less stress in daily life.
- They want greater freedom to choose their doctors and healthcare plans.
- They want their kids to get a better education.
- They want to eat healthy food for their family and themselves.
- They want safe, effective drugs.
What are the 5 Alternative medical systems?
Ayurveda acupuncture and homeopathy are the five alternative medical systems.
Acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of qi (energy) throughout the entire body.
Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient system for health care that balances the three major humors, water, fire, and air. It includes diet, exercise as well as herbal remedies, massage and meditation.
Homeopathic Medicine gets its name from the Greek word homoios (similar) and pathos (disease). Homeopaths believe that all diseases have natural causes but not always symptoms. They use minute amounts of substances to treat their patients. These symptoms are very similar to what the patient experiences when they are sick.
Energy Healing is also known for Reiki, EFT Rolfing Therapeutic Touch, Rolfing and Rolfing. This therapy is based on a belief that we are all connected to the universal life force known as Ki. This Ki flows freely through us and makes us feel good. Energy healers use touch or intention to restore harmony between our spiritual, emotional, and physical selves.
Aromatherapy uses essential oil extracted from plants for therapeutic purposes. Aromatherapists believe certain smells can have a positive effect on mood and behavior. The most common essential oil used in aromatherapy is lavender.
How safe are holistic medicines?
Holistic medicines can be safe as they don’t contain harmful drugs and are natural remedies that people have used for centuries.
They have been shown to cure many illnesses, such as arthritis, chronic pain, asthma, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, infertility, etc.
Millions of people suffer from various illnesses use holistic medicines. They include homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, herbal treatments, massage therapy, yoga, meditation, biofeedback, hypnosis, nutrition, counseling, physical fitness, exercise, and other complementary therapies. These therapies address the whole person instead of just the symptoms.
What’s the difference between holistic medicine versus alternative medicine?
Holistic medicine treats the whole person: body, mind, spirit, and soul. It examines all aspects that affect a person’s overall health. These include the psychological, spiritual and environmental factors often overlooked in traditional medicine. Alternative medicine addresses specific conditions, such as asthma, allergies, arthritis, and other ailments.
Is holistic medical legitimate?
The answer is both yes and no. Yes. Numerous medicines have been found to be effective in treating various diseases. They don’t cure all ailments. It all depends upon what you mean with “holistic.” It depends on what you mean when you use the term “holistic”.
Many people believe holistic medicine has existed since ancient times. This is false. Even though some healers from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and other countries used natural remedies, this was without any scientific knowledge.
Medical practitioners started to study anatomy and physiological science in the Middle Ages. This led to the development and practice of surgery, obstetrics and pharmacology. The majority of Western countries had built public hospitals by the 19th century that allowed trained doctors to offer medical care.
Today, conventional medicine is the dominant form of healthcare. Many people still prefer to utilize complementary and alternate medicine. Many find that it works better for them than pharmaceutical drugs.
Some people are more comfortable receiving massage therapy than taking tranquilizers. Others enjoy eating healthy foods instead of taking prescription medications. Still, others find that regular exercise helps their bodies function at peak performance.
