Is holistic medical care the same as alternative medicines?
Holistic Health Care differs from Alternative Medicine because it focuses on treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.
Holistic Health Care considers all aspects of a person's life including their mental, physical and emotional health, as well as occupational, cultural, social, and familial factors.
Alternative Medicine doesn’t address these problems. It doesn't address these issues.
What Is Alternative Medicine?
It is an approach to healing that focuses on prevention rather than cure. It encourages people be educated consumers, actively participating in their own health and well being.
Alternative medicine refers to any system of diagnosis and treatment that does not employ allopathic (conventional) medical practices.
What is alternative medicine called?
Alternative medicine is a broad term that describes any alternative approach to healing. Although there are many forms of alternative medicine, most are based on the premise that health care should be rooted in natural substances and practices rather than chemical medicines.
Alternative medicine includes acupuncture.
Alternative practitioners often claim that they have better outcomes for patients, with fewer side effects and lower costs. These claims cannot be proven scientifically because the mainstream medical system has largely ignored evidence-based alternatives to medicine.
What is the Difference between Naturopathic and Holistic Medicines?
The two main types of medicine are conventional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. Conventional medicine relies on drugs and surgery as its primary treatments. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses natural therapies such as herbs, vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat illness and promote health. CAM is not meant to replace conventional treatment, but to help patients who are able to choose what is best for them.
Naturopathy on the other side is meant to be used in conjunction with conventional medical procedures. It focuses on treating the whole body, mind, and spirit. There are many forms of naturopathy: Ayurveda and Traditional Native American Medicine as well as Functional Medicine.
It is important that you note that some CAM modalities may overlap with traditional medicine. Both doctors and naturopaths may prescribe herbal remedies. However, naturopaths tend to emphasize lifestyle changes over prescription medications.
Naturopathy is often called “complementary” or “complementary”, because it works with traditional medicine rather than replacing it. Naturopaths may prescribe medication as needed.
There are differences between naturopathic medicines and other CAM modalities.
- Naturopaths are not qualified to prescribe or diagnose medication.
- Naturopaths are able to work closely with patients' family physicians and refer them to specialists when necessary.
- Naturopathic physicians are licensed by their respective provinces, while CAM practitioners are selfregulated.
- Naturopathy emphasizes prevention, wellness, and education about diet & exercise.
- Naturopaths emphasize the importance of lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep, stress management and exercise.
- Naturopharmacists specialize on the treatment of certain conditions with botanicals or minerals.
- Naturopodists are skilled in providing personalized care that meets the needs of each patient.
- Naturopaths are licensed by regulatory bodies like the College of Naturopathic Physicians of Ontario.
- Naturopatrists are licensed by provincial regulatory bodies.
- Naturopaticians can be registered with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
- The College of Naturopaths of British Columbia issues licenses to Naturotherapists.
- The United States National Board of Medical Examiners is authorized to license Naturobiotic therapists.
- The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency licenses homeopaths.
- The belief that all aspects should be considered in making health decisions is called “holistic”. Holistic doctors will not focus on just one aspect of the equation but consider all elements.
Is holistic medicine legitimate?
Yes, and no. Yes. Many medicines have been shown to be effective against different ailments. Because they can't cure every condition. It all depends upon what you mean with “holistic.” If it means taking into account all aspects of an individual's health, then yes, but if it just means using natural remedies over chemical ones then no.
Some claim holistic medicine was around since ancient times. This is false. Even though some healers from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and other countries used natural remedies, this was without any scientific knowledge.
It was not until the Middle Ages when medical practitioners began to study anatomy & physiology. This led directly to the development surgery, obstetrics, pharmacology, and a host of other medical specialties. In the 19th Century, almost all Western countries had public hospitals that could be used by trained doctors to provide medical care.
Conventional medicine has become the dominant form for healthcare. But, many people still prefer complementary and alternative medicine. Many people find that it is more beneficial than taking pharmaceutical drugs.
People may feel more relaxed after having massage therapy than they do when taking tranquilizers. Others enjoy eating healthy foods instead of taking prescription medications. Still, others find that regular exercise helps their bodies function at peak performance.

What kind of products are used in holistic medicine?
These products can be described as natural, but not necessarily organic. These products could have been grown naturally without pesticides or fertilizers. But they were also processed in a way that is safer for your health. For example, some herbs can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, so they may need to be prepared differently depending on their needs. The herbs sold in health food stores are more standard than those found at grocery stores. These latter may contain higher levels herbicides as well as fungicides.
Herbal supplements are usually made from dried plants. Some people prefer to purchase them in liquid form because they are usually cheaper. They are still safer, however. Liquid herbs can lose nutrients during processing. It is not possible to guarantee the product's original potency. A majority of herbal supplements aren't subject to quality control testing before being sold.
Spices and herbs are usually added to foods after they have been cooked. You'll find them in condiments like ketchup, mustard, salad dressing, barbecue sauce, soup mixes, and marinades.
Supplements are generally taken orally (by taking them by mouth). Most vitamins or minerals come in tablet format. Other vitamins and mineral are also available in capsule form.
Homeopathic remedies may be high-diluted substances that have been extracted from either plant, animal, mineral or synthetic sources. They stimulate the body's healing processes. They are homeopathic, but do not function like regular medications. They activate the immune system of the body to restore balance and promote well-being. Homeopathic remedies can be considered safe and non-toxic. They are widely used in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Acupuncture uses fine needles to insert into specific points along your meridians. It is based in a traditional Chinese medical theory which says that life force flows through energy channels. According to this theory, illness is caused by blockages in these channels. Energy flow can be restored by stimulating certain points along meridian lines with fine needles. This is how the body returns back to normal functioning.
Chiropractors adjust the spine to correct misalignments. American doctor Daniel David Palmer developed this technique in 1895. He claimed he could diagnose ailments and cure diseases through manipulating the vertebrae. His methods included spinal adjustments. Muscle tests. And percussion.
Chiropractic has grown in popularity over the last few years. Many believe that it works better for back pain than conventional medicine.
Massage therapy involves rubbing, kneading, tapping, or stroking muscles, joints, and other body parts. Massage is a great way to relax tight muscles and reduce tension. Swedish massage, deep tissues, sports, reflexology, myofascialrelease, trigger point therapy and other methods are used by massage therapists.
Reflexology uses pressure to be applied to specific areas in the feet and hands by using thumb pads, fingers, or toes. This treatment stimulates your body's natural healing abilities, say reflexologists.
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils obtained from plants to alleviate stress, enhance well-being, and elevate moods. Essential oils are therapeutic as their chemical makeup can benefit health conditions such arthritis treatment to headache relief. There are many kinds of aromatherapy.
Craniosacral therapy uses gentle touch to relieve pain and discomfort. Cranial refers to the skull; sacrum means “sac” in Latin, and cranial sacral therapy combines both. This therapy uses light pressure to apply pressure to specific areas on the head and neck, shoulders or arms. It also involves moving the hands around the body of the patient.
Cupping therapy involves applying cups to the skin to draw out toxins and create suction. Cupping can be used to detoxify.
Oral or topical supplements can contain vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts as well as amino acids, enzymes. Probiotics, antioxidants and fatty acid are all examples of dietary supplements. The FDA regulates dietary supplements under the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1994. Two criteria must be met before a dietary supplement can be legally sold. To be legally sold, a dietary supplement must meet two requirements. First, it must contain a “dietary element,” which is a supplement that contains more than one percent of a Vitamin, Mineral, Herb, or Other Botanical listed on the Food and Drug Administration’s Generally Recognized AS Safe List. It must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices. This means it was properly manufactured.
Electrotherapy uses currents to stimulate nerves, and muscles. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) is the most popular form of electrotherapy. Low-level electrical pulses are delivered by TENS devices using electrodes that are placed on the skin. These pulses activate brain receptors to block pain signals. You can also use electrotherapy in other ways, such as interferencential current therapy or magnetic field treatment, and even ultrasound therapy.
Energy healing relies on the belief system that all of us have innate healing abilities. In addition, our thoughts and feelings can impact our physical health. Although energy healing has been practiced since ancient days, practitioners today accept that there is more than one layer of energy. Emotional energy is one layer. Another layer is known as mental energy. Others include spiritual, psychic, chakras vital, life force prana, Kundalini and biofield as well as quantum fields. These energies may be connected to the entire universe, according to some. Some claim that they can heal others using just their mind. There is not much scientific evidence supporting energy medicine.
Energy psychology is about studying the effects of emotions on physiological functions, and vice versa. Because it doesn't focus on the past but focuses more on helping clients change their behavior now, energy psychology is sometimes considered an alternative or complementary to psychotherapy. Energy psychology does NOT require a theoretical framework. It draws from many disciplines, such as cognitive behavioral, transactional, interpersonal psychoanalysis (attachment theory), and developmental psychology.
