ArborVitae’s Foundations program
One of the oldest trees in North America, the Arborvitae, has many practical uses in landscaping. Its wide variety of leaf colors and sizes make it an ideal choice for foundation plantings and hedges. Its wood is valuable for use in construction, including log cabins, fence posts, shingles, paneling, canoes, and wood crafting. Unlike many other trees, arborvitae requires little maintenance.
One of the most important aspects of planting an arborvitae is the spacing between trees. A three to four-foot-wide tree is best planted at least 3 feet away from a house. This gives the root system room to spread and grow. The Foundations program also teaches the proper spacing between trees for the best results. By following these guidelines, you can avoid costly mistakes that could lead to problems down the road.
The Emerald Green Arborvitae tree, also known as ‘Smaragd’ because of its Danish heritage, grows in a pyramid shape. Its rounded, pyramid-shaped shape makes it a great choice for foundation plantings or as natural privacy screens in smaller yards. Emerald Green Arborvitae trees can grow up to 10 feet tall and three to four feet wide. They are fast-growing and hold color well during winter months.
