Pictures, text prompts, documents and health metrics are just a few examples of data we’re giving away to different AI applications and thus, to different companies/organizations. It is important to understand what happens to your data in healthcare settings.
Social media platforms have made it clear that a new era has begun. Individuals are now valuable resources. They can provide tons of data that can be used for commercial purposes. As AI apps become more prevalent in our daily lives, we need to be more aware of what we give away.
We decided to look into what happens to data that is uploaded to or generated by the most popular AI platforms.
Horatio believes there are many more things in heaven than on Earth.
The whole matter is more complex than it appears at first glance because there are many layers of privacy/legal issues. These include:
- Personally identifiable information (including sensitive data like social security numbers, financial identifiers, health data, etc) collected by companies/organizations
- We provide information to these algorithms, including personal (user), financial (billing), and prompts (sample images, business or personal queries, health symptoms, etc.).
- Copyright concerns regarding any content or material we create using these services, and the legal implications for us using them for personal or commercial purposes
- Copyright issues in our publicly available content that could have been used to train an algorithms without our knowledge
Let’s start with what is obvious. We are far from understanding these issues clearly, and legal experts are trying to provide guidance and weigh in. These two aspects are particularly confusing.
Midjourney: A scary list of personal information collected
Midjourney’s text-to-image generator provides the following information:
“By using the services, you may give Midjourney personal information such as Your email address, billing information and favorites, favorite images, outputs, text prompts or samples of images You upload to the service, or your email address. You can find our privacy policy here.
Open questions:
You will find out that privacy policies differ depending on where you live and that there are slightly different terms for California and European users.
It’s not clear to me at this time if the vast amount of information they declare to collect and disclose in California is correct.
- Social security numbers, driving licence and passport numbers
- Postal addresses
- Number of your insurance policy
- education, employment, employment history,
- Bank account number, credit card number or debit card number, as well as any other financial information.
- Information about medical conditions or insurance
These personal data may also be collected and disclosed in Europe. The GDPR regulations provide protection for such data.
For me, it is also quite confusing
- How does one collect such personal data?
- We are not certain for what purpose they intend to collect and share all of the sensitive and personal information listed above.
- It is impossible to determine what data users who are not located in the EU or California will receive.
Applications from Open AI (DALL–E, ChatGPT), let’s stop talking about it
OpenAI’s privacy policy and terms of service provide clear guidance on ownership and usage rights for created content.
“As between the Parties and to the extent allowed by applicable law owns all Input. OpenAI hereby grants to you all rights, title, and interests in and to Output. ”
Open questions:
They are less clear about their position regarding personal data. California users are again mentioned in the privacy policy. It also states that they collect technical, social and communication information. The policy does not specify what type of information they collect.
It is also unclear what happens to non-US users. International users are informed by the privacy policy that ” your Personal Data will be transferred from you location to our facilities, servers in the United States“. However, there is no indication as to whether this data processing is in compliance with US data protection regulations. EU users can still rely on the GDPR protections.
Ada Health: The best European fashion in confusing terms
Ada, a German company that offers AI-backed mobile apps for health and wellness, is based in Germany. You will find all the privacy information you need under the appropriate section of the website. This includes the GDPR (in bold) and an assurance that their customers are safe when they use their services.
Then comes a slew of legal jargon that no human can comprehend. This is particularly sweet because they mention that “Before you start using our Services, please read our Privacy Policy carefully.” This is a classic example of corporate compliance that does not have the slightest intention to help the user.
This is how I tried to understand it.
- The privacy policy section 3 provides a detailed list of the data that they have collected and for what purpose. This makes sense. We want to use this app for health assessment. Without providing any health data or records, it is impossible.
- Section 6 is where the interesting part begins. We can discuss “disclosure personal data” with other parties. According to my understanding, they have a number US service providers. They asked them nicely to behave in a European manner.
- They also assure users that they won’t transfer personal data to any third party unless the case falls within the listed exceptions. This includes anything: they sell or buy assets; their company is acquired. Users’ rights to opt out are not listed.
- Another interesting snippet of information is the ” third party processors to provide infrastructure service“, which is a long and extensive list that includes Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
- The entire document is confusing. Statements like ” We will not share your personal information with advertisers or other third parties” can be followed by ” A complete list of third-party processors that process your personal data on our behalf and strictly following section 3 can be found … ” and ” We do not transfer your personal details to third parties, with the exception of those listed below.
This is an excellent example of how you have no idea what happens to your personal data, even though you’ve read the relevant sections many times.
Questions: GDPR is supposed protect my privacy rights. However, I don’t know what happens to my data or what control I have.
AI-based Voice-Over Revoicer: We have your data. Thanks for all the fish
Revoicer’s privacy policy was refreshing after the Ada statement. Revoicer does not promise anything, they only collect data and plan to use it. They may use the data collected to sell products or send offers from third parties. Tracking pixels are analytics tools that can collect personal information without users consent. These tracking pixels come from Facebook and Google. Revoicer assured me that They do not share my personal information (email or phone number) with anyone.
Revoicer’s homepage doesn’t mention anything about the rights to use generated content. This could be problematic in some cases. In theory, I could use this platform to record the audio portions of my next viral YouTube video that generates 7 billion views. We don’t know what would have happened if the company demanded compensation for the assumed financial results.
Open Questions: No personal data. They will collect your data and make use of it in any way they can. Re content usage rights: Everything
Synthesia is an AI-based video generator: We have the content, you have our data.
The Synthesia Terms of Use state that all input (uploaded data), and output (created contents) rights are the users’. Uploading copyrighted material or any other illegal content is the responsibility of users.
They seem to combine the Ada approach with the Revoicer approach when it comes to processing personal data. A lot of text is used to mention GDPR. It also mentions the fact that they collect data and track users. They also allow Google, Facebook and Hubspot to collect analytics data about users.
Ask questions : Not really. However, it is important to know that they may store a lot of data. You can find out what they have, and how to inquire about them. There are also links to privacy policies that might apply to third parties who may have access to your data.
All content of Meeting transcription AI Fireflies is available to AI Fireflies
Fireflies.ai is another confusing tool, which is used in over 62,000 organizations. This software is meant to assist you in taking automatic notes and summaries during meetings.
The “terms and conditions of service” are a very poor read. They are a lengthy and difficult to read pdf that lists all your responsibilities. You can also decline any of them.
Fireflies is granted a worldwide irrevocable, perpetual and non-exclusive, transferable, royalty free license to make any User Content available through the Services. This license includes the right to view, copy, modify, distribute to Fireflies, as well as the right to sublicense to enable them to use, access to, view, copy to adapt, modify to distribute, license to sell, transfer to others, publicly display, perform, transmit to, stream, broadcast, or otherwise exploit such User Content via the Services.
This means that the information I use to access the service can be published. It makes me wonder what 62,000 organizations thought when they signed up.
They promise nothing, and their privacy policy is just as unpleasant.
Open Questions: Why would anyone use such services? ?
Man, give me the takeaways!
You’ve made it this far. I’m sure that you’ve already realized the key lesson: Don’t take anything for granted. These are just a few examples of AI applications from a broad range.
Some are used primarily for entertainment (Midjourney and DALL-e), while others are used for business purposes (ADA Health). You can see that privacy and legal issues are still far from settled. They can also vary greatly between apps.
You should not give out personal or corporate data, nor create personal/corporate content. It is best to spend the time and misery to read these often lengthy documents and to learn what type of trades you can expect to make.

Frequently Asked Questions
Complementary and Alternative Healthcare – Does it have Evidence-Based Basis?
Although evidence for complementary and other medicine is still being developed, there are many benefits to these treatments. They might have tried other treatments, but they were ineffective. Or they may prefer to try alternative therapies because they offer more benefits than traditional care. As part of a holistic approach, they might look for complementary and alternate medicines. It is important for patients to verify that any alternative or complementary medicines they are using have been supported by scientific research. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure if a treatment is effective. It could save you money and time in the long run.
Alternative medicine is important.
Alternative medicines are more popular than traditional ones because they’re usually cheaper and healthier. Unfortunately, many patients have died as a result of side effects like allergic reactions. Alternative therapies might also be available.
Alternate medicines can be dangerous, especially if you don’t know enough to choose the best ones. Vitamin supplements, for instance, aren’t controlled like pharmaceuticals. This makes it easy to take too many vitamins. Some alternative remedies can contain toxic chemicals, which is even worse.
What are the strengths of holistic medicine compared to conventional medicine?
Holistic medicines have been used for thousands of years by many cultures and religions worldwide. They were developed based on ancient knowledge and experience.
These medications are safe, affordable, effective, natural, as well as cost-effective. Side effects are less common than with prescription drugs.
They can also improve your health and wellbeing.
They can protect you from disease and improve your overall wellbeing.
They could even be used to treat heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, asthma and depression.
There are hundreds of different traditional medicines worldwide, each with unique benefits.
According to the World Health Organization, around 80% of the population uses traditional methods to treat their illness or injury.
It has been reported that around half a trillion people rely on traditional herbs for their primary health care.
The global market in complementary therapies is expected to reach $22.2 Billion by 2020.
To avoid side effects from conventional treatments, people are turning to alternative methods of medical care.
If they don’t respond to any other treatment options, many people look to complementary therapies. They might also consider them before considering surgery or medication.
There are several reasons why people choose complementary therapies:
- To improve quality of life
- To reduce stress levels
- For relaxation
- To relieve pain
- To enhance immunity
- For support in coping with serious illnesses
- To boost energy
- To control weight
- To maintain good nutrition
- To improve sleep patterns
- To manage chronic conditions
What is the alternative to holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine examines the whole person and all its aspects. Holistic medicine is based on the idea that every illness has multiple causes. It requires a combination therapy to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Doctors who practice holistic medicine believe that prevention is better than cure. They partner with patients to achieve optimal wellness.
They look for the root causes of disease to prevent them from returning. Holistic physicians consider the entire body and not merely the physical organs. They sometimes refer to “the whole body” as the entirety of their being.
This means that they look beyond the skin and treat the body holistically. The doctor may suggest changes to diet, lifestyle, and exercise. He may also suggest meditation or yoga exercises, herbal supplements, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, or other forms of alternative medicine.

What are the Shortcomings and Advances in Holistic Medicine?
Holistic medicine, a type of medical practice, emphasizes the importance and interdependence of mind, spirit, environment, social factors, and the healing process. It was developed during the late 19th century by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), who published his first book, The Doctor’s Book of Mind Cure, in 1924. He used simple techniques, such as visualization, meditation, and even hypnosis. People with stress, anxiety, depression or pain experienced this treatment. This type of therapy also helps patients to cope with their problems, and improve their quality-of-life.
While holistic therapies are still being used today, there is not enough evidence to support their effectiveness. However, some studies show that these treatments can help reduce symptoms associated with chronic conditions such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, migraine, obesity, osteoporosis, and others.
There are many positives and negatives to holistic medicine.
- Lack of scientific evidence. A few carefully designed, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), have evaluated the effectiveness of holistic therapies. The majority of researches show positive results.

A Brief History of Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine is a method of healing that treats the whole person, not just the symptoms. It covers all aspects of the body, including emotional, mental and spiritual as well as occupational, environmental, cultural and lifestyle influences. It is a way to prevent illness through diet, exercise or stress management.
Bastyr University in Seattle established the first holistic medical school in 1972. Holistic medicine was born after Dr. Andrew Weil published “Spontaneous Healing” 1996. Dr. David Williams founded the American Holistic Medical Association, Dr. Michael Murray co-founded it in 1997. There are hundreds of holistic medicine schools all over the world, including Bastyr University in Columbia, Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons and Maharishi Ayurveda Institute.
Holistic medicine was named by the World Health Organization as one of the five most important trends in healthcare. This trend involves integrating conventional medicine with complementary therapies such acupuncture (homeopathy), herbalism, massage treatment, reiki and yoga. This integration aims at providing safe, effective, patient centered care while minimizing costs and side effects.
Holistic medicine works because of the interconnectedness of our body, mind, and spirit. Instability can result in illness if any of these parts is not in balance. This is an example:
Stress and anxiety can cause you to become anxious and tense. Cortisol is a hormone which increases inflammation. The result is fatigue, weakness, and sickness.
If your emotions run high, you may experience negative feelings and thoughts like fear, anger, grief, or sadness. These feelings cause stress in your brain. If this stress is not treated, your body will produce adrenaline or cortisol. Adrenaline boosts heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. Cortisol is a hormone that affects your immune, digestive, and nervous systems. Both hormones cause fatigue, muscle tension, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and other health problems.
You can lose your faith and hope in life if you feel depressed. You may also lack self-esteem and confidence. This can lead to poor eating habits, unhealthy relationship patterns, and low energy. Your spirit will make you feel happy, cheerful, peaceful, optimistic, and positive.
The difference between alternative medicine and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine uses scientific methods. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. When necessary, they prescribe medication and perform surgery. Allopathic doctors believe that they have a complete understanding of the human body and can treat any illnesses. Alternative medicine involves herbs, vitamins minerals, diet, exercise and spiritual healing. There is no one standard definition for alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is also known as natural medicine or integrative medicine. Others refer to it as traditional medicine, naturopathic medicine, and CAM.
