What can you do right now to feel great? Get moving! Get moving! Our bodies were designed to move throughout the day. Regular activity can improve moods, reduce anxiety, and help maintain healthy joints. You can do the best exercise if you do it consistently.
Can exercise improve the gut microbiome?
Exercise is good for your gut health, as it increases the diversity of the body’s microbial communities. Research has shown that exercising can increase the production of butyrate. This fatty acid is known to reduce inflammation and repair the gut lining. This could help to prevent diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome/inflammatory bowel disease and insulin resistance.
Exercise can reduce inflammation in all parts of the body, including the GI tract. Research has shown that cardio exercise can help reduce leaky gut syndrome. (1) Some of the adverse effects of high-fat diets can be countered by exercise, but not all.
IBS sufferers have reported improvement in their symptoms with targeted exercise therapies. Exercise can also improve cognition and symptoms of mood and psychological disorders. Exercise training has been shown to improve cognitive function in stroke patients. It also showed improvements in schizophrenia and depression symptoms. Exercise was linked to improvements in IBS symptoms and mental health. Evidence suggests that the bacterial diversity in the gut may be a contributing factor to GI disorders. It negatively impacts GI function as well as the psychological state.
The Best Exercises for Digestive Health
It doesn’t take a lot of time to run a marathon. Regular exercise and activities that provide benefits to the body, while not overworking it or stressing it are the best types of activity that support optimal digestion. Exercising too often can cause digestive problems. If you want to keep your gut healthy and happy, there are several tried-and-true exercises you can do. A study of women showed that subjects who exercised at least three hours per week had higher levels of beneficial bacteria than those who were sedentary.
You can add more physical activity to your daily routine by choosing something that is simple to set up and maintain. Walking daily before and after meals is an easy way to get started. Even if you only do 10 minutes of yoga a day, it can have many benefits. Numerous studies have shown that yoga is a good exercise option to reduce IBS symptoms and depression. Yoga is a traditional mind/body-breath discipline. It includes a trio of postures, structured breathing, and meditation. Four randomised controlled trials were recently identified that looked at traditional yoga as a treatment for IBS patients. These studies showed that yoga was more effective than pharmacological treatments and equal to dietary interventions and moderate-intensity walks. The physical and mental health benefits included IBS symptoms severity, gastric motility, and depression. (2)
The research continues to examine how exercise can alter intestinal bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. This could have a direct impact on exercise response. Researchers should also try to document as many aspects as possible of lifestyle, such as diet and training level, as well as sedentary habits.
While the exact cause and effect of exercise are not known, evidence suggests that it may help to improve the relationship between the gut (and brain) through changes in the microbiome. This may be why exercise is a useful therapeutic tool and strategy for both psychological as well as GI disorders. While there is no direct relationship between exercise and digestion there are many evidences that exercise can improve gut health and the brain-gut relationship.
The motivation to exercise can be boosted by gut microbes
There are many benefits to exercising that can be used to maintain a healthy body. The motivational pleasure that comes from long-term physical activity is an important factor in encouraging exercise. This is due to exercise-induced neurochemical effects in the brain. According to a recent study, some bacteria species that live in the gut activate nerves to encourage exercise. (3) These results indicate that exercise’s rewarding properties are affected by the microbiome and can explain individual variation in exercise performance.
According to clinical evidence, exercise has a positive effect on the microbiome of the gut. Regular exercise can help you to overcome common digestive problems and improve your gut health. An improved microbiome in the gut can lead to improvements in your overall health and well-being. This can help you avoid many chronic diseases.

What is the difference between Naturopathic and Holistic Medicine?
The two main types of medicine are conventional medicine and complementary/alternative medicine. Conventional medicine relies on drugs and surgery as its primary treatments. Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses natural therapies such as herbs, vitamins, acupuncture, and massage to treat illness and promote health. CAM is not meant to replace conventional treatment, but to help patients who are able to choose what is best for them.

- Naturopharmacists specialize on the treatment of certain conditions with botanicals or minerals.
- Naturopodists have the ability to offer individualized care that is tailored to each patient’s needs.
- Regulators such as the College of Naturopathic Physicians of Ontario license Naturopaths.
- Provincial regulatory bodies license naturopatrists.
- Naturopaticians can be registered with the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors.
- Naturotherapists are licensed by the College of Naturopaths of British Columbia.
- The United States National Board of Medical Examiners accredits Naturobiotic therapists.
- The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency licenses homeopaths.
- The belief that all aspects should be considered in making health decisions is called “holistic”. Holistic doctors will take into account all aspects of life, rather than focusing on one.

Holistic Medicine – A Short History
Holistic medicine treats the whole person. It is not about treating their symptoms. It includes physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, occupational, environmental, cultural, and lifestyle influences. It emphasizes prevention rather than cure and aims to prevent disease through diet, exercise, relaxation, stress management, etc.
Bastyr University in Seattle established the first holistic medical school in 1972. After the 1996 publication of “Spontaneous Healing,” Dr. Andrew Weil’s book, holistic medicine began to take root. In 1997, the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) was founded by Dr. David Williams and Dr. Michael Murray. Today, there are hundreds of holistic medicine schools worldwide, including Bastyr University, Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, Maharishi Ayurveda Institute, Pacific School of Oriental Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and many others.
Holistic medicine was named by the World Health Organization as one of the five most important trends in healthcare. This trend integrates conventional care with complementary therapies like homeopathy, acupuncture or herbalism, massage, therapy, reiki, yoga and meditation. This integration is designed to deliver safe, effective, patient-centered healthcare while minimising side effects and costs.
Holistic medicine works because of the interconnectedness of our body, mind, and spirit. Instability can result in illness if any of these parts is not in balance. Let’s take, for instance:
When your mind is anxious or stressed, you can become tense and out-of-balance. Your body responds by producing cortisol, a hormone that increases inflammation throughout your body. You feel weak, tired, and sick as a result.
You feel negative emotions such as anger, fear, grief and sadness when your emotions are high. These emotions can cause stress in the brain. If you don’t treat this stress, your body can produce adrenaline (and cortisol) if it isn’t addressed. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and heart rate. Cortisol can affect your nervous system, immune system, and digestive tract. Both hormones can cause muscle tension, fatigue, headaches (dizziness), insomnia, anxiety and depression, among other health problems.
A depressed spirit can lead to a loss of faith and hope. It is possible to lack self-esteem or confidence. This can lead you to poor eating habits and unhealthy relationships. It can also cause low energy. Healthy spirits make you happy, positive, joyful, peaceful, and optimistic.
Differentiation between alternative and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is based upon the scientific method. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. If needed, they may prescribe medication or perform surgery. Allopathic doctors believe they know what is happening inside the human body and how to treat illnesses. Alternative medicine is based on herbs, vitamins and minerals, diet, exercise as well as emotional support and spiritual healing. There is no standard definition of alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is also known as natural medicine or integrative medicine. It is also known as traditional medicine or naturopathic medicine.
