Since over ten years, I have analysed technological trends in the healthcare industry. I’ve seen currents come, go, and made forecasts on them. I even showed you how to get your own crystal-ball and learn forecasting.
Why is it important to me? By analysing possible outcomes, we can avoid the hype (remember Theranos?) that results in headlines and no results. It can lead to misleading information and ultimately mistrust among users. Alternatively, some technologies and companies should be highlighted because they could bring the transformation of the healthcare industry a step nearer to reality.
The first time we published the hype cycle was at the end 2021. In the digital health world, things move fast, so it was time to refresh the hype curve and make sure everything has its rightful place. The 2023 edition has been updated and includes some new features.
The Medical Futurist has created a hype cycle to show 50 of the most promising technologies in digital health today. Our ebook will give you a detailed explanation on how to interpret trends, novelties and trends, as well as an explanation for each trend and why it was placed in its respective category.
What is a hype-cycle?
Gartner, an American consultancy and research firm, coined the term and concept. The infographic explains the maturity of various technologies and their use and perception. Also, they show how these technologies can be used to solve real business issues and take advantage of new opportunities. The excellent concept they have can be very informative about medical technology.
The Medical Futurist has focused on the digital health technologies that have the greatest impact on healthcare at all levels – from the patients to the physicians and from the institutions to the regulators.
It is important to show the maturity of a trend in order to avoid over-excitement. At the same time it can create hope for the future, as certain technologies can improve the relationship between the doctor and patient through the necessary cultural change.
What is the meaning of an infographic?
The hype curve shows the level of anticipation for a particular technology. The higher the curve is, the more people are anticipating it. The horizontal scale shows how the technology relates to reality. It can be a practical tool or it could have reached a plateau where it is able to deliver actual healthcare solutions.
It is also important to consider the color that we chose for each technology. We analyzed the promise of each technology and its feasibility in real healthcare settings. Then we looked at the expected progress. It was a subjective choice to color each trend, since it cannot be quantified.
The Medical Futurist writes a lot about 3D printed drugs. This is not a coincidence. We believe that 3D printing is a technology with unstoppable potential. This technology will shape the future of pharmaceuticals, and it will challenge our notions of the industry. It opens up new opportunities for the supply chain. The hype cycle shows that there is still a way to go before the technology really hits pharmacies – but we are on the right track to benefit from it.
Virtual reality for pain management is a great example of how a promising technology has reached its limits. In hospitals and clinics that are forward-looking, it is widely used. The technology is capable of a great deal and has been used in the pain management field for a long time. However, with current technological advancements, we can create so many new things within this area. I’m sure we will soon see new companies opening the doors to this field for us all, but it won’t happen over night.
We had high expectations for nutrigenomics technology only a few years ago, when the first companies in the field emerged. The hype surrounding genomics was a good fit, and the knowledge that your genes can affect how your body processes foods created an expectation that it would change our understanding of food. It didn’t.
The Medical Futurist believes that the concept is still great, and will one day be able deliver on its original promise. The future is in Nutrigenomics, but the concept has been so hyped up that companies have seized the spotlight to promote their products without the necessary science. It is interesting to note that most companies centered around food technology are no longer in business. I hope that the second wave will be more successful.

Homeopathic remedies may be safe and not toxic. They are popularly used in Europe and South America.
Acupuncture involves inserting needles at specific points on the meridians of your bodies. The practice is based upon a traditional Chinese medical theory, which states that there are energy channels through the body through which life force flows. This theory claims that illness can be caused by blockages within these channels. By stimulating certain points along the meridian lines with fine needles, energy flow is believed to be restored, and the body returns to normal functioning.
Chiropractors can manipulate the spine to correct misalignments. American doctor Daniel David Palmer devised this method in 1895. He claimed that he could diagnose illness and cure them by manipulating the vertebrae. His methods included spinal adjustments and muscle tests. He also percussion.
Chiropractic has grown in popularity over the last few years. Many believe that it works better for back pain than conventional medicine.

It must also have adhered to Good Manufacturing Practices. This means that its ingredients were properly handled during production.
Electrotherapy uses electrical currents in order to stimulate nerves or muscles. TENS (transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation) is the most commonly used form of electrotherapy. Low-level electrical pulses are delivered by TENS devices using electrodes that are placed on the skin. These pulses activate brain receptors to block pain signals. Electrotherapy can also be used in interferencential current therapy (MFT), magnetic field therapy, or ultrasound therapy.
Energy healing is based on belief that each person has natural healing abilities. Additionally, our thoughts, feelings, and intentions have an effect on our physical and mental health.
