I was not expecting that Internal Family Systems, which I became involved in a decade earlier, would become a spiritual path. I began practicing IFS as most people do – to help me deal with trauma that had not been treated and to counteract the spiritual bypassing I was using to avoid confronting those who mistreated or abusing me.
I did not expect that, beyond dogma and belief, beyond New Age spirituality or religion, lies a natural spirituality, waiting to be revealed when enough “parts”, begin to relax, give space, and let go. It doesn't really matter what you call your Inner Pilot light, your Self, Christ Consciousness, Buddha Nature, or the God/Goddess within. This natural way to relate to the sacred both inside and outside is a result of our trauma healing work.
Dick was also surprised, as he is a trained family therapist who was raised by doctors and atheists. It turns out, however, that IFS is a spirituality of a very organic nature.
In our weekend Zoom workshop Spirituality Without Bypassing, Dick Schwartz, founder of IFS and IFS will explore this topic. Please register as soon as possible if you are sure that you would like to attend. Our last collaboration was very popular.

When I say that IFS is a spiritual path I am not referring to a sacred text, dogma, or group you have to join. This is both a personal spiritual path and a relationship path. You will change your relationship with others and their parts when you start healing yourself. As you scale that up, it will change how you present yourself in your community and in the world of politics, activism, and social justice as part of a spiritual path that is conscious. This is the exact opposite of any path that portrays its followers as “better” or “superior”, or more special, than non-believers.
According to Harvard Professor Paul Farmer, “The idea of some lives being less important is at the core of everything that's wrong in the world.” An IFS-informed approach to spirituality helps us to be compassionate with ourselves, and to others we may not even know. We can use the courage, clarity and confidence we have to embrace a larger spirituality than our little circle of comfort, and to express compassion with our feet.
Some IFS practitioners may begin their journey as a personal spiritual quest. This is because they are naturally absorbed by the hurts in their bodies, especially if they have been ignoring these parts for decades. Initially, they're so happy that we are listening to their parts that they can be quite needy. Over time, when they begin to trust themselves, we will be able to give more, not only within our family system but also beyond it.
The process can be slow at first, especially if your protector parts are trying to keep you from feeling pain. But if you stay with it, and you have enough self-leadership, you will find that you want to do everything you can to help those in need.
Let's all play together in this investigation! Join us in this weekend of exploration with an open heart and all your Self.
In the last three years I have offered two programs on spiritual bypassing and written a manuscript entitled LOVE BIGGER: A Spirituality without Spiritual Bypassing Exploration. This course will not be a review of that in-depth inquiry. This course will focus on the social and personal justice aspects. We will offer Spirituality Without Bypass students access to the foundational material so that they can get what their parts need.
Come and join us!
We are excited to get to know you, your self, and all the parts of yourself that may come up to explore spirituality. We can't wait to engage with you, your Self and any parts that come along to explore spirituality without bypassing.
Warmly
Lissa & Dick Schwartz

Frequently Asked Questions
What does holistic mean?
Holistic means whole-based. It means looking at the whole picture rather than just part of it. It is difficult to do this because we tend to see things as individual parts.
We often think of grey as black and white. However, grey comes in a wide range of shades.
When working on a project, you should try to view it from multiple angles. Take a look at it from every angle.
You should try to see it all as one. How does each of its components interact with one another?
And if you find a problem, ask yourself why this particular element is causing trouble. Don't forget about the effects of any change that you make.
What are the benefits of alternative treatment methods for cancer patients?
When trying to deal with their cancer, patients with the disease are often confronted with many obstacles. They may have lost all hope or feel helpless as there is nothing they can do. Patients might experience nausea, pain or fatigue, as well as loss of strength and appetite.
Additionally, most traditional treatments do not work against cancer cells. Patients with cancer should look into alternative treatments, such as complementary medicine. Studies have shown that half of all cancer patients have tried alternative treatments at least once.
Sometimes, cancer patients will choose complementary medicine to chemotherapy. This is because they believe it will be easier and more effective in managing side effects. They may also prefer it because it is less expensive.
You can also use the following reasons:
Natural remedies may be able to prevent a recurrence, according to some patients.
Many believe natural remedies can improve quality of life.
Others believe natural remedies could reduce your chance of developing cancer.
For those concerned about possible side effects of chemotherapy, natural remedies can be used as first-line therapy.
What are some of the benefits of complementary or alternative medicine?
Complementary or alternative medicine (CAM), is a general term that covers medical practices that people use when they feel they don't get enough from allopathic medicines. These include herbal medicines, mind-body therapies such as acupuncture, massage therapy, homeopathy, chiropractic care, traditional Chinese medicine, biofeedback, hypnosis, and spiritual healing. Because they are not compatible with conventional medicine's treatment and diagnosis, CAM practitioners may use alternative treatments. Many CAM therapies incorporate elements from conventional medicine. One example is acupuncture that uses needles. Others use heat or acupressure.
Some CAM therapies may be helpful for anxiety, pain relief, stress management or relaxation. They may also improve your general sense of well-being and reduce fatigue. Some CAM therapies address specific conditions like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and diabetes. Other CAM treatments may be just as enjoyable.
Although there is no clear definition of CAM, many definitions include at most one of the following:
- A holistic perspective which considers both body and mind, as well the environment.
- The belief, that mind and body influence and interact
- The belief that illness is due in part to an imbalance between the individual (and his/her environment)
- The whole person is treated, not just the symptoms
- Combination of Eastern philosophy with Western science
- Mind, body, and spirit-integrated treatment methods
- Natural products are better than synthetic chemicals
- The healing touch
- Mindfulness
- Meditation
- Acupuncture
- Yoga
- Herbal remedies
- Homeopathy
- Chiropractic care
- Massage therapy
- Hypnotherapy
- Spiritual healing
- Biofeedback
- Nutritional counseling
- Energy healing
Certain CAM therapies can have risks. If used incorrectly, some therapies can cause severe harm or even death. Others pose potential side effects that must be weighed against their perceived benefits. Before you make a decision about whether to try any CAM, it is important that you discuss the issues with your doctor.
What does complementary medicine refer to?
Complementary Medicine encompasses any medical treatment that adds to the mainline. This covers treatments such as acupuncture (aromatherapy), chiropractic care, homeopathy and hypnosis.
Complementary medicine should not be considered in isolation of conventional medicine. Because they combine Western scientific methods with other proven healing methods, they are sometimes called “alternative” and “integrative medicine.”
What is holistic medicine's opposite?
Holistic medicine is an approach to health care that considers all aspects of the human body and its emotional, social, spiritual, and environmental dimensions. Holistic medicine is based on the idea that every illness has multiple causes. It requires a combination therapy to achieve maximum effectiveness.
Holistic medicine practitioners believe prevention is better that cure. They work closely with their patients to help them achieve optimal wellness.
They look for the root causes of disease to prevent them from returning. Holistic physicians treat the entire body, not just its organs. They often refer to the entire being as “the body.”
This means that they go beyond skin care and treat the entire body holistically. The doctor may recommend changes to your diet, exercise, or life style. He may also recommend meditation or yoga exercises, herbal supplementation, massage or chiropractic treatment, as well as acupuncture and other forms of alternative medicine.
Is holistic medical care the same as alternative medicines?
Holistic Health Care is different from Alternative Medicine in that it treats the whole person and not the symptoms.
Holistic Health Care examines all aspects a person's health including the mental, emotional, spiritual and occupational factors as well as family factors.
Alternative Medicine doesn't address these issues. It focuses solely on the body, mind, emotions, etc.
What are the benefits of holistic medicine over conventional medicine?
Many cultures and religions around the globe have been using holistic medicine for thousands of year. They were developed based on ancient knowledge and experience.
These medicines are safe, efficient, natural, and inexpensive. Side effects are much less than those associated with pharmaceutical drugs.
They can also improve your health and wellbeing.
They can prevent you from getting sick and boost your overall well being.
They might even cure cancer, diabetes or heart disease.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of traditional medicines all over the world. Each one has its own unique benefits.
According to the World Health Organization, 80% of people rely on traditional treatments for injury or illness.
It has been reported that around half a trillion people rely on traditional herbs for their primary health care.
By 2020, the global market for complementary therapy is expected to be worth $22.2 billion.
People are increasingly turning to alternative medical practices to avoid harmful side effects associated with conventional treatments.
Many people turn to complementary therapies when they do not respond to other treatment options. They may also try them before resorting to surgery or medication.
There are many reasons people choose complementary therapies.
- To improve quality of life
- To reduce stress levels
- For relaxation
- To ease pain
- To enhance immunity
- Help with managing serious illnesses
- To boost energy
- To control weight
- To maintain good nutrition
- To improve sleep patterns
- To deal avec chronic conditions

What products can be used in holistic medicines?
These products are best described as “natural” although not necessarily organic. They may have been grown using natural fertilizers and pesticides, but they were also processed in ways that are less harmful to human health. Some herbs, such as some that can cause allergic reactions, may need to be prepared differently depending upon their specific needs. Herbs sold at health food stores are more standardized than those sold at grocery stores. These herbs often have higher levels of herbicides than those sold at grocery stores.
Most herbal supplements are made from dried herbs. People prefer to buy them in liquid form as they are cheaper. This doesn't necessarily mean they are safer. Liquid herbs can lose nutrients during processing. It's not guaranteed that the product will retain its original strength. In addition, most herbal supplements don't undergo quality control testing before being put on store shelves.
Spices and herbs are usually added to foods after they have been cooked. These spices can be found in sauces, condiments, dressings, soup mixes, marinades, and salad dressings.
Supplements are generally taken orally (by taking them by mouth). Most vitamins or minerals come in tablet format. Other vitamins and mineral are also available in capsule form.
Homeopathic remedies can be highly dilute substances that are derived from animal, plant, mineral, and synthetic sources. They are intended to stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms. They are homeopathic, but do not function like regular medications. They instead activate the body's immune system and restore balance. Homeopathic remedies may be safe and not toxic. They are used extensively in Europe, Canada and Australia, New Zealand as well as South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Acupuncture uses fine needles to insert into specific points along your meridians. The practice is based upon a traditional Chinese medical theory, which states that there are energy channels through the body through which life force flows. According to this theory, illness is caused by blockages in these channels. The stimulation of certain points along the Meridian lines with fine needles is thought to restore energy flow and allow the body to return to normal function.
To correct misalignments in the bones, chiropractors manipulate the spine. American doctor Daniel David Palmer invented this technique in 1895. He claimed he could diagnose and treat diseases by manipulating vertebrae. His methods included spinal adjustments and muscle tests. He also percussion.
Chiropractic has seen a lot of popularity in recent years. Many people think it is more effective than traditional medicine for back pain.
Massage therapy involves rubbing, kneading, tapping, or stroking muscles, joints, and other body parts. Massage can loosen tight muscles, relax tension and soothe sore muscles. Swedish massage, deep tissues, sports, reflexology, myofascialrelease, trigger point therapy and other methods are used by massage therapists.
Reflexology can be described as alternative medicine. It involves applying pressure to certain areas on the feet and hands with thumb pads or fingers. Reflexologists claim that this method stimulates the body's natural ability to heal.
Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to reduce stress, increase well-being and improve moods. Aromatherapy is also beneficial because essential oils can have a positive effect on health conditions, such as headache relief and arthritis treatment. Aromatherapy can be used in many ways, including:
Craniosacral Treatment uses gentle touch for pain relief and discomfort. Cranial refers the skull and sacrum, which in Latin means “sac”, is cranial sacral therapy. This therapy uses light pressure to apply pressure to specific areas on the head and neck, shoulders or arms. It also involves moving the hands around the body of the patient.
Cupping therapy uses cups placed on the skin to produce suction and draw out toxins. Cupping can be used to detoxify.
Supplements are either oral or topical products that contain vitamins and minerals, herbs extracts, enzymes, probiotics. antioxidants, and other fatty acids. Dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA under the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1995. To be legally sold, a dietary supplement must meet two requirements. It must be a “dietary component,” which means it contains more than 1% of a vitamin or mineral, herb, or any other botanical listed on Food and Drug Administration's Generally Recognized as Safe List. Second, it must have been manufactured according to Good Manufacturing Practices, meaning its ingredients were handled properly during production.
Electrotherapy uses electric currents to stimulate muscles and nerves. The most common type of electrotherapy is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). The skin electrodes used to place TENS devices allow for low-level electrical pulses. These pulses trigger brain receptors that block pain signals. Electrotherapy can also be used in interferencential current therapy (MFT), magnetic field therapy, or ultrasound therapy.
Energy healing is based on belief that each person has natural healing abilities. Additionally, our thoughts, feelings, and intentions have an effect on our physical and mental health. Modern practitioners accept that energy healing is possible, even though it has been practiced since ancient times. However, there are many layers to energy. One layer is called emotional and another is mental energy. Another is called mental energy. Others include spiritual, psychic, chakras vital, life force prana, Kundalini and biofield as well as quantum fields. Many believe these energies are linked to the whole universe. Some believe that these energies can be used to heal other people using only their minds. There is not much scientific evidence supporting energy medicine.
Energy psychology involves studying how human emotions affect physiological functions and vice versa. Because it doesn't focus on the past but focuses more on helping clients change their behavior now, energy psychology is sometimes considered an alternative or complementary to psychotherapy. Although energy psychology does not have a particular theoretical framework, it draws from many disciplines including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), transactional analysis, interpersonal psychoanalysis and attachment theory.
