29. Unconditionally Loving All Our Parts
In this series, I am reviewing the Cliff Notes of everything I should have learned in medical school but didn’t. This includes everything I’ve learned since completing my medical training about healing, from my own research and self-study. If you haven’t read the first 10 revelations about healing that I didn’t learn in medical school, please refer to Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.
As children, we all crave unconditional love. Many of us have young parts that desperately seek this perfect acceptance. However, this intense desire for unconditional love outside of ourselves can lead us to make self-destructive choices that hinder the healing process.
Ultimately, true unconditional love must come from within. However, since we initially seek it from our parents and later from our partners, mentors, and friends, we often become disillusioned. People will inevitably let us down because they are human, and humans are rarely capable of providing perfect acceptance. This breakdown registers as trauma in our nervous systems, and most of us experience this devastating letdown.
The solution is to develop a more adult understanding of love, offering unconditional love to our own inner child parts, and managing our expectations of others. It is realistic to recognize that expecting others to love us unconditionally often leads to mistreatment and expecting forgiveness when we misbehave. Similarly, striving to love someone else unconditionally can lead to tolerating abusive behavior without setting boundaries, all in the name of unconditional love.
We can love someone and still protect ourselves. We can love someone and choose to end the relationship or maintain no contact. We can love someone and hold them accountable or even take legal action against them. We can love someone from afar and never see them again.
While striving to love someone unconditionally is admirable, access to our bodies, homes, emotions, intimate relationships, bank accounts, children, and other privileges should be conditional. If someone is abusive, we must withdraw access to these privileges. Otherwise, unconditional love can easily turn into self-abuse, which ultimately harms us.
Real healing, both for ourselves and others, requires introspection. We must redirect our focus inward, developing a deep connection with our wounded parts. By doing so, they can finally release their immature pursuit of perfect love outside of ourselves.
30. Recognizing Your Worth
Many individuals who become ill have a distorted perception of their worth, value, and identity due to childhood trauma. They also develop distorted worldviews and belief systems as a result of this trauma. For example, they may believe their only worth lies in being useful to others, rather than recognizing their inherent worth as human beings.
Additionally, they may grow up thinking they are damaged or unlovable. They may feel defined by mental or physical illness, such as being the sickly child or the psychiatric patient who is the family’s outcast. Healing your identity requires unraveling these distorted self-perceptions and replacing them with accurate, truthful beliefs about yourself and the world.
People who have been cured of “incurable” diseases often report experiencing a profound transformation in their sense of worth, identity, belief systems, and worldview. This transformational experience can occur through therapy, a close and safe friendship, or a spiritual awakening. These individuals come to realize that the world is not a cold, unfriendly place and that they, along with others, possess real and true value. They discover that love exists and is available to all.
31. The Healing Power of Love
You have the ability to heal yourself, but you cannot do it alone. While the body has an innate capacity for self-healing, most of us cannot embark on the healing journey of trauma recovery in isolation. Even introverts require a supportive community of safe, nurturing, non-judgmental, and loving individuals who can guide and nurture them.
Love is what gives us the will to live. Without sufficient love, some people simply give up and resign themselves to their fate. In order to thrive, we need a strong will to live, and this often comes from the love and support of others.
32. The Importance of Healthy Boundaries
Your body will say no when you lack healthy boundaries. Many individuals who claim to want to be cured are unaware that they have conflicting parts within themselves. Some parts genuinely desire to be free from disease, while others are resistant to letting go of the medical reasons that excuse them from unwanted responsibilities.
For example, someone might use their illness as an excuse to avoid going to a job they dislike or to fulfill the cleaning demands of an overly obsessive-compulsive partner. While consciously sabotaging our health is not something most of us would do, these hidden parts believe they are protecting us by using our bodies as an excuse. If our boundaries are wounded, we may struggle to say no, and we may be conditioned to tolerate abusive behavior from entitled narcissists. In such cases, a legitimate medical excuse becomes necessary to assert ourselves.
Becoming aware of and developing intimacy with these resistant parts is crucial for healing medical conditions. Unfortunately, conventional medicine often overlooks this essential aspect of healing.
33. Reciprocal Relationships as Medicine
You deserve to enjoy reciprocal, healthy relationships and protect yourself from controlling relationships and narcissistic abuse. Nurturing, loving, and empathic relationships that involve shared power and healthy boundaries can significantly improve your health. On the other hand, being oppressed by narcissistic abuse, repeatedly having your boundaries violated, feeling overpowered and dominated, and losing your autonomy and ability to protect yourself can lead to increased disease risk and decreased longevity.
If you find yourself being drained by vampiric relationships, your health will inevitably suffer. Reciprocal relationships with healthy give-and-take dynamics support your overall well-being and improve longevity.
34. Healing as a Relational Activity
Despite the notion that healing can be achieved individually, the idea of healing alone is not realistic. It takes a community to support the healing of physically and mentally ill individuals. The good news is that if your life force or will to live diminishes, others can help lift you up.
While all living beings possess life force energy, sometimes external assistance is necessary when our own life force weakens. We may need someone (or a group of people) whose life force flows more freely to boost ours until our own life force can move through us unhindered. Humans have the incredible ability to entrain one another, promoting the free flow of life force energy. This lies at the core of the therapeutic process. When a therapist embodies their own sense of self, they can help entrain their client’s sense of self, thereby enhancing their life force until they can do so independently.
Conversely, while others can boost your life force, they can also drain you. This is how narcissists deplete their victims, using the same methods that can be applied for healing. However, excessive energy transfusions are temporary. They do not cure you, but rather provide a temporary boost while you address the root cause of the energy drain. If someone is draining your life force, or if you are overexerting yourself to transfuse others, conventional medicine or energetic transfusions will not lead to true healing.
