The art and science behind prompt engineering is to craft effective inputs that guide an AI model in the direction of generating the desired outcome.
To put it in a less-fancy way: prompts are inputs. The better we become at prompting, the better our output. Prompt Perfect and other plugins can be helpful, but they won’t solve your problems.
ChatGPT, like other similar tools, can be risky. It may provide answers from hallucinated or fabricated sources, and it is up to us users to verify that information. It is a powerful tool that has many limitations. However, it’s becoming more and more popular.
Understanding the art of “prompt engineering” is becoming increasingly important. It is so important that I would recommend to every medical professional that they learn it. Soon, it will be included in our AI course. While formal education is a great place to start, there are many practical ways you can improve your skills as a prompt engineer in the interim.
As with any skill, mastering prompt engineering takes practice. Here are some tips I learned from hundreds of hours of trial and error over the last few months. These are things I use every day and I want to share them with everyone.
These guidelines will make your journey easier and more rewarding, whether you are a seasoned AI user or just beginning to explore this brave new world.
1. Be as specific and detailed as you can
The more specific the prompt, the better the chances of getting a focused and accurate response.
Example:
Tell me more about heart disease.
What are the common risk factors of coronary artery diseases?
2. What is your goal?
Describe the output that you want. This helps you to highlight the important aspects of your output.
Example: “I would like to receive a list of five ideas for a YouTube video about the future of AI in healthcare.”
3. Please describe your context and the setting.
Imagine that you are talking to ChatGPT like you would talk to a new friend who could still answer your questions or help you with your problems. The more accurately you can describe your goals, target audience and tone, the better the outcome will be.
Example:
I’m writing an essay about ChatGPT prompting tips and tricks, aimed at people who work in healthcare. Please list some of these tips and tricks along with specific examples. My audience is made up of medical professionals, who aren’t AI experts. Please adopt a friendly and approachable tone.”
4. Try out different prompt styles
Your prompt’s style can have a significant impact on the response. You can try different formats, such as asking for a list to be generated, a summary or an explanation, like “I’m five” (ELI5).
Example:
Direct question: “What are symptoms of COVID-19?”
Request for list: “List the symptoms of COVID-19.”
Request for Summary “Summarize key symptoms and progressions of COVID-19.”
ELI5 : “Explain COVID-19 symptoms like I am five.”
5. Play roles with Ask It
You can then get the information you are looking for.
Example:
“Assume the role of a data scientist and explain Prompt engineering to a doctor.”
Act as my nutritionist, and give me some tips on a Mediterranean diet that is balanced.
6. You can refine and iterate to get deeper answers or to dig deeper into the subject.
You are unlikely to get the response you want after the first prompt unless you’re a genius at prompt engineering. Please feel free to refine the question. It is also encouraged that you ask it to modify its output based on the previous response. You can guide the model by using continuation prompts if you are not getting the desired output. It can be more efficient to use this method than to try and get the perfect answer in one prompt. You can make your question a conversation by asking the AI to discuss the pros and cons or think in steps before coming up with an answer.
What causes diabetes?
AI: “Diabetes results from the body’s inability or unwillingness to use insulin …”
You can refine the question: “What causes the body to not produce insulin?”
AI: “The inability of the body to produce insulin is caused by the autoimmune destruction in the beta cells of the pancreas as in Type I diabetes …”
Feedback loops can help you dig deeper into details when you’re in an unfamiliar area and searching for information. ChatGPT tends to give generic answers at first, but you can use the output for future prompts.
