Unani
Unani alternative medicine aims to balance external and internal factors affecting an individual’s health. It may suggest using natural medicines or dietary changes to help the patient achieve optimal tabiyat. The hakims (medics) of Unani practice believe that these principles help the body to heal itself.
Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine originating in India. It is a system of natural treatments that utilizes plants for prevention and treatment of various health issues. Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani have been used by humans for thousands of years to treat disease and maintain well-being. For example, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a disease associated with cognitive disorders and memory loss, may be treated using plants.
In addition to being natural and eco-friendly, Unani is also more effective than many other medical practices. Its vast pharmacopeia contains over 2,000 natural medicines derived from a variety of plant, mineral, and animal sources. The Unani system is a very popular alternative health care system.
Siddha
Siddha is an elemental substance found in nature. It is derived from the yogic science and is used to treat the basic material of the human body. As such, it differs from pharmacopeia in its application. Similarly, the pharmacopeia of Siddha uses chemical compounds, but in a much more complex way.
While there is some overlap between Siddha and Ayurveda, both systems have important differences. Ayurveda is rooted in Hinduism, which holds that the body, mind and soul are interconnected with the outer world. It has evolved to address many modern health issues. It is a recognized medical system in modern India. In fact, many practitioners of Ayurveda are state licensed and institutionalized. It is estimated that two-thirds of the rural Indian population uses Ayurveda. In the United States, some 751,000 individuals have received Ayurvedic treatment.
In Siddha medicine, five elements are believed to be inherently balanced in the body. These elements are known as the doshas. These doshas, which affect the body’s function, are comprised of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. In Ayurveda, each of the elements is responsible for specific functions within the body.
Siddha system
The Siddha system in alternative medicine traces its roots back to India. It incorporates alchemy formulas and techniques into its treatment regimen. In the siddha system, the patient’s diet and habitat are considered therapeutic agents as well as the cause of the disease. The system also makes use of various herbal products.
A poster in front of the clinic illustrates some of the basic features of the Siddha tradition. It mentions the seven cakras, the cittarkal, and the five constituents. It also highlights eight diagnostic methods. These include the use of a sphygmomanometer and pulse reading based on three nati.
In Singapore, there are currently two siddha clinics, but they are not practicing pancakarma. Most clinics practice ayurveda instead. It is important to evaluate the siddha practitioners against the ayurveda system to decide which is more effective for a patient.
