Diabetes is a wonderful mimic. Diabetes can affect many organs and systems in the body, causing symptoms that could sometimes confuse even a doctor.
Maturity-onset diabetes is silently creeping into the body. The victim often remains unaware of the condition and suffers symptomless. However, juvenile diabetes is sudden and can cause severe symptoms.
Symptoms – These symptoms indicate that you may have diabetes:
- Polyurea (excessive, frequent urination) The urine that contains sugar, carries a lot of water. Therefore, a diabetic often has large urine outputs.
- Polydipsia: Dryness of the mouth and excessive thirst – This is a result of the body’s efforts to compensate for fluids that have been lost from excessive urine.
- Excessive hunger (polyphagia): Diabetes is characterized by the inability of glucose to enter various body-cells. Despite being nourished with glucose-rich serum, the cells become starved. They are afflicted by ‘poverty in a world of abundance’. The body creates abnormal and excessive hunger to overcome this cellular starvation.
- Weight loss: When Mlucose is not being used by the cells, the body uses stored fats to nourish the cells. The person then loses weight.
- Body-ache, weakness, and fatigue: The body also breaks down stored muscle protein in order to feed starving cells. This is what causes undue weakness or fatigue.
- Mental fatigue, lack of concentration and mental fatigue: Brain cells rely on glucose to sustain their bodies. They are unable to use the glucose available, which causes undue mental fatigue. The person becomes forgetful and unable to concentrate.
- Wound infection and delayed healing: High glucose levels are a breeding ground for micro-organisms capable of forming pus. Diabetes can also cause damage to the nerves and blood vessels, causing a reduction in blood supply and a change in skin sensations. This is why even small wounds on diabetic patients can easily become infected and fail to heal quickly.
- Susceptibility to infections of skin, gums, and respiratory system: Diabetes can lead to rapid growth and reproduction in disease-causing micro-organisms by supplying glucose-rich blood. A hormonal imbalance can also lead to a decline in natural immunity against diseases. Diabetic can easily get infections in the skin, gums, and respiratory tract. He is often plagued by colds, boils, carbuncles and pyorrhoea.
- Extreme itching, particularly in the genital areas: Diabetes is often suspected. This is caused by irritation of the nerve-endings in the skin and genital organs from excessive glucose.
- There are frequent changes in the sharpness and spectacle numbers. Variations in the focussing power can be caused by changes in the glucose concentration in the internal fluid (aqueous). A diabetic must change his spectacle lenses often. The glucose in the aqueous is what feeds the crystalline lens. Diabetes can lead to untimely cataracts by compromising the nutrition of the crystalline lenses.
- Itching, numbness or weakness of the limbs or an abnormal increase/decrease in skin-sensations are all symptoms ofDiabetes.
- Impotence or sexual debility: These symptoms include general weakness, disintegration and mental depression, as well as changes in blood-circulatory, nervous and other systems.
- Diabetic unconsciousness or hyperglycemic coa : The body uses stored fats to fuel starving cells. The body produces ketone bodies through fat disintegration. An excessive amount of ketone body production leads to blood acidity and eventually unconsciousness. Diabetes is often diagnosed and suspected after the victim has become unconscious.
In addition, the following circumstances could also raise suspicion of diabetes:
- Sudden weight gain after 45 years of age
- Coronary heart disease.
Only about 30% of diabetics experience the above symptoms. Others, particularly in the early stages of the disease have no symptoms. The disease is diagnosed either due to a presenting condition or accidentally (e.g.
- During a general examination for another disease.
- Before any surgery, laboratory investigations are conducted.
- During investigations recommended by a Life Insurance Corporation.
