As we approach the end of the year it is time to review how digital health has progressed in 2022. It’s easy to get lost in all the noise. Between January 2022 and November 2022, I shared over 1,000 articles, studies, and news items. As in 2021, 2020, and so forth, I chose the 10 topics that I think will be most important in the future healthcare.
1. The Rise of Digital Therapeutics (DTx).
Contrary to many unsubstantial hypes (NFTs and Metaverse, to name a few), DTx is a meaningful trend that can bring about significant short-term improvements in personalised health care. DTx provides evidence-based and clinically supported solutions to improve and/or manage health conditions using software and/or digital health technologies.
DTx solutions are usually delivered via smartphone apps. This means that almost everyone can access the DTx solution via their smartphone apps. Accessibility is a key factor in any new solution becoming widely used. However, it also allows for privacy. Treatments can be brought to patients’ homes and removes stigmas that are often associated with a variety of therapies in substance abuse treatment or mental health. This article will provide more information about real-life, exciting examples.
2. Technology and/or retail giants enter primary care
We’ve discussed their progress for years and the vigor with which tech companies and/or retailers try to gain a foothold in healthcare is not new. These companies might have used different strategies, such as Google investing heavily with DeepMind AI and Verily or Microsoft focusing exclusively on EMR and cloud solutions. However, billions have been invested in these ventures.
However, 2022 brought a new chapter. A number of large players decided to take over as primary care providers. In late July, Amazon acquired One Medical, a primary care provider. A week later, CVS announced its intention to enter primary care by the end the year. In just over a month, it announced that Signify Health would be purchased for $8 billion. This beat Amazon.
CVS news was hot when TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, paid $1.5 billion to acquire China’s largest private hospital chain Amcare Healthcare. A few more weeks passed before Walgreens published plans for a new “Walgreens health” division. These plans included a $5.2 Billion investment in Village MD, the primary care company.
3. Virtual Wards Becoming A Reality
It is not a new idea to allow some patients to heal at home. A lot of evidence supports the idea that home healing is better for people suffering from certain conditions. They are not at high risk for hospital infections. They are not under any pressure to miss their family. The benefits are many. A visiting nurse can perform any medical procedure that requires a trained professional.
There have been many obstacles. Some of these obstacles were objective, such as a lack of tools, methods, equipment, workforce, or workflow. Others were psychological. At least in this regard, the pandemic was the motivation and pressure that the virtual ward idea required. Many hospitals/healthcare system came to the same conclusion that their capacity was deteriorating under the COVID waves. Some patients do not require hospitalization. They just need to be monitored.
Virtual wards were created during the pandemic. However, they can be used to treat a wider range of conditions and symptoms. This was actually proven in the last two years.
4. Roche Sets the Standard for Other Pharma Companies in Digital Health
Roche announced that it will unify its digital healthcare portfolio under the Navify branding, which includes 30+ digital solutions for hospitals and labs around the world. They created the new ecosystem to bring together healthcare companies, startups, and medtech firms with the aim of providing fast access to innovations for patients.
Roche bought MySugr, a diabetes startup. It was clear that they were betting on digital health. It’s a major step forward for Roche and other pharma companies to enter a new realm.
5. WHO launched Florence 2.0, an AI Healthcare Worker that is free and accessible.
It is clear that healthcare systems need some innovative ideas to work in the 21st century. The WHO projects a shortage of 10 million health workers by 2030. People are living longer and the global population is growing faster.
Version 2.0 Florence provides an innovative, multilingual and interactive platform to disseminate various health-related topics. It can offer advice on mental health and tips on destressing, as well as guidance on eating right, being more active, quitting smoking and quitting e-cigarettes. She can also provide information about COVID-19 vaccines, and other topics. Florence 2.0 is now available in English. French, Spanish and Chinese versions will follow.
The WHO will be able to create a useful chatbot that can be used worldwide. Although I doubt it, the WHO is clear: AI-based medical technology must be deployed as the healthcare worker shortage will not go away.
6. Vocal biomarkers are in
Vocal biomarkers are not new. They can be used to detect vocal patterns (voice, breathing or cough patterns). AI can be used to assist physicians in diagnosing certain diseases even when they are not present. Physicians have used patients’ voices for years.
This project is part NIH’s Bridge to AI program. It was launched more than a year ago with over $100 million in federal funding. The goal is to create large-scale databases of healthcare data for precision medicine.
Parkinson’s disease can be diagnosed in someone who speaks slowly and low. A stroke can cause slurring. Scientists may even be able to diagnose depression and cancer. The team will begin by gathering voices from people suffering from five conditions: voice disorders, neurological disorders, mood disorders and respiratory disorders. They also collect the voices of children with autism and other developmental disorders.
Here is a quick overview of the vocal biomarker concept. It will allow you to see what it can do.
7. An easy way to detect breast cancer at home: Bring the point of care to your bathroom
Dotplot, a device that allows women to self-check at home for breast cancer detection, has been awarded the prestigious UK James Dyson Award. Medical professionals welcomed the invention, but warned that it cannot replace a visit to the doctor.
“Users can create a personalized map of their body by entering their breast size and shape, and then pressing the handheld device on their chest. Soundwaves are used once a month to record tissue composition. Users are advised to consult a healthcare professional if they notice any unusual changes or abnormalities.
Although every case of breast cancer can be detected in time using screening devices such as this is significant, this solution illustrates an even larger concept: it brings the care directly to patients. This trend will change healthcare by involving patients in their care more.
8. A drone delivered a defibrillator that saved the life of a cardiac arrest patient
You don’t have to read science fiction-like stories every single day.
A drone is partly responsible for keeping a man alive in Sweden today. According to The Verge, the 71-year old suffered a heart attack in December while shoveling snow. A drone flew in a cardiac monitor and saved his life.
Four-month pilot studies of the Everdrone’s Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery Program revealed that 14 cardiac arrest alerts were detected. These alerts would have been eligible for drones. They took off in 12 cases, and delivered the defibrillator cargo to their destination in 11 cases. The drones with the AED device arrived on the scene in seven minutes.
9. Smart TVs are becoming a remote care platform
It’s not a new idea to turn your TV into a remote healthcare hub. Researchers created a remote health aid system for the elderly in 2012 using a TV set. We are now exploring the idea, as a major tech company recently advocated for telehealth via TVs. Independa, the remote health platform for remote healthcare, was announced by electronics giant LG in early 2022.
In just a few short months (late November), a follow up product, Carepoint TV Kit 200L was released. It is currently in beta testing. The product, powered by Amwell’s Converge platform and aimed at helping clinicians better engage patients in the midst of healthcare’s workforce crisis.
They aren’t the only ones. HealthTap, an online healthcare provider, and Samsung have a strategic partnership to provide virtual healthcare for Samsung Smart TVs in America.
We are seeing how an already existing device (almost everyone has one after all) can offer new, health-related advantages.
10. What the Metaverse Hype Is and How It Might/May Not Transform Healthcare
Healthcare is increasingly becoming an online component in the digital health era. One cannot help but wonder what impact this hyped future of the internet might have on this sector. We decided to explore the possibilities of how this can be integrated into healthcare.
Although it sounds appealing, the possibility of expanding healthcare to the metaverse must be considered. The interoperability problems that plague healthcare and electronic health systems are a well-known legacy, so it is possible to believe that the metaverse can solve these problems. Already, we see different visions of the metaverse and differing versions from Big Tech. This leads us to consider’metaverses’ instead of one interoperable metaverse.
There are also practical problems with VR headsets, which pose as enablers of metaverse – at least for now, costing at least $500. Others might have to set up the device or carry a 500-g load on their foreheads for prolonged periods.

What Are The Advances And Shortcomings Of Holistic Medicine?
Holistic medicine, a type of medical practice, emphasizes the importance and interdependence of mind, spirit, environment, social factors, and the healing process. It was developed during the late 19th century by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), who published his first book, The Doctor’s Book of Mind Cure, in 1924. Simple techniques like meditation, visualization, hypnosis, and visualization were used by him. People with stress, anxiety, depression or pain experienced this treatment. In addition, this kind of therapy helps patients cope with their problems and improve their quality of life.
While holistic therapies remain popular today, little evidence supports their effectiveness. However, some studies show that these treatments can help reduce symptoms associated with chronic conditions such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, migraine, obesity, osteoporosis, and others.
The advancements and the shortcomings of holistic medicine can be seen in:
- Insufficient scientific evidence. A small number of well-designed randomized controlled trials, (RCTs), evaluate the health benefits of holistic treatments. Positive results are the norm in most observational studies.
- Low cost compared to conventional medicine. Alternative medicines may be more affordable than traditional medicines, especially if the patient eats a healthy diet.
- Patients are not under any pressure to adhere to the prescribed protocol.
- Many doctors will recommend complementary treatments, even if they are not prescribed.
- Many holistic therapies can be used alongside conventional medicine. For example, acupuncture may be combined with medication or surgery.
- Alternative therapies are believed to be more effective than conventional medicine.
- Alternative drugs are considered more natural and less harmful than traditional drugs.
- Many patients take complementary treatments to supplement their lifestyle changes. They want to feel healthy and enjoy life.
- Holistic treatment patients are often healthier.
- Older adults are increasingly turning to holistic treatments.
- Complementary treatments require more research.
- Studies show that most people prefer alternative treatments to going to the doctor.
- Doctors must understand that not everyone will benefit from alternative treatments.
- Holistic treatments should be a part of our culture, education system and society.
- Holistic treatments may not be safe for all.
- It is important to learn how to educate patients about the different treatments so they can make informed choices.

Holistic Medicine–A Brief History
Holistic medicine focuses on the whole person and not just their symptoms. Holistic medicine includes all aspects of a person’s life, including their physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, occupational and cultural influences. Prevention is better than treatment. It focuses on prevention and management of disease, such as diet, exercise, relaxation, stress management, and so forth.
Bastyr University established the first holistic school of medicine in Seattle in 1972. After the 1996 publication of “Spontaneous Healing,” Dr. Andrew Weil’s book, holistic medicine began to take root. Dr. David Williams, and Dr. Michael Murray founded the American Holistic Medical Association in 1997. There are hundreds of holistic medicine programs worldwide today, including Bastyr University (Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons), Maharishi Ayurveda Institute and Pacific School of Oriental Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine is also available.
Holistic medicine was named by the World Health Organization as one of the five most important trends in healthcare. This trend involves integrating conventional medicine with complementary therapies such acupuncture (homeopathy), herbalism, massage treatment, reiki and yoga. This integration will provide safe, effective and patient-centered care with minimal side effects.
Holistic medicine works because of the interconnectedness of our body, mind, and spirit. Illness can occur when any one of these three components is out of balance. This is an example:
Anxiety and stress can make you anxious, causing you to feel tense or out of balance. Your body responds by producing cortisol, a hormone that increases inflammation throughout your body. As a result, you feel tired, weak, and sick.
If your emotions run high, you may experience negative feelings and thoughts like fear, anger, grief, or sadness. These emotions can cause stress in the brain. If left untreated, this stress causes your body to produce adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and heart rate. Cortisol affects your immune system, digestive tract, and nervous system. Both hormones can cause muscle tension, fatigue, headaches (dizziness), insomnia, anxiety and depression, among other health problems.
When your spirit is depressed, you lose hope and faith in life. It is possible to lack self-esteem or confidence. This can lead you to poor eating habits and unhealthy relationships. It can also cause low energy. Your spirit will make you feel happy, cheerful, peaceful, optimistic, and positive.
Difference between allopathic and alternative medicine
Allopathic medicine is founded on science. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. They prescribe medications for treatment and surgery when needed. Allopathic doctors believe they are able to diagnose and treat illness. Alternative medicine can be used for vitamins, minerals, diet and exercise. Alternative medicine can be defined in many ways. Alternative medicine is also known as natural medicine or integrative medicine. Others refer to them as traditional medicine, holistic medicine, and CAM.
