I don’t think I am alone in this, but I love tier lists. They can be about anything – the nutritional value or strength of Terraforming Mars. I was therefore delighted that we created the list of digital health products. The Medical Futurist ranked 23 digital health technologies according to their respective tiers. Our YouTube channel has the video.
Here is a sneak peak at the video to see how digital health devices or technologies are classified. Let’s look at how useful the device/technology is for measuring a health parameter or vital signs.
It’s therefore important to not declare that a smartwatch from X manufacturer is better than one from Y. Although I’m certain that this would be a very popular idea, the usefulness of a device is subjective. You need to conduct your own research in order to determine what you think is best.
You can also be objective and determine whether X is a practical method for Y.
Dr. Mesko’s video used these categories, so let us stick to them:
- S Superb
- The Greatest
- B Fine
- C Meh
- D Bad
- Never again
Here we go! You will find the complete list below, along with an example of each tier that explains why a device was placed into the category.
The Tier List
S tier
- PPG blood pressure patch
- Continuous heart rate monitoring via smartwatches
- Smart sleep alarm
- ECG in hand
- Home vision test
A tier
- Upper arm blood pressure measurement
- Check for blood alcohol at home
- Fitness Tracking
- ECG on smartwatch
- Comfortable continuous ECG monitor on the chest
- Smart otoscope at home
- Smart peak flow meter designed for asthmatics
B tier
- Blood pressure measurement at the wrist
- Smart Utensil
- Sleep Quality Under the Mattress
- Wearable 4/7 glucose sensors
C tier
- Body thermometer
- EEG headband
- Listening to heart sounds and lung sounds
D tier
- Oxygen saturation
- Galvanic skin reaction
E tier
- Smartwatches that measure blood pressure
- Sleep headband
Here are a few examples.
Measurement of blood pressure on the chest – S tier
It has been a long time since we have had a 24-hour bp monitor that was so comfortable, it went unnoticed. BioBeat is a first in its kind experience. No bulky box. No pumping cuffs.
Checking blood alcohol levels at home: A Tier
This is not your average digital health device but it’s a very useful one, particularly if you live in a country with a low or no tolerance for driving. It used to be that only medical labs and police could check blood alcohol levels. But now, anyone can. This is great for after a party.
Sensor for sleep quality under the mattress B-tier
Until about 10 years ago, these sensors were the only way to get information on sleep quality. Most of these sensors now work with your smartwatch or phone to provide more detailed information. If you had to pick between your smartwatch and the sensor under your mattress, it would be difficult to decide.
Listening to heart sounds and lung sounds C tier
This is a very interesting one. They come with ECGs, AI data analysis, and other features. These are aimed at medical professionals. Heart and lung sounds could and should be measured by digital health devices. There could also be ways of offering these features in a user-friendly way. We are still not there, and this issue is not solved from a digital health device perspective.
Digital health device for measuring oxygen saturation – D tier
Since decades we have devices that measure saturation and they work. These gadgets are now so common that they can be found at home and not just in hospitals. In addition, saturation measurements are already incorporated into wearables such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. It seems pointless to dedicate a digital health device solely for the purpose of sharing oxygen saturation data.
Sleep headband E Tier
Iza, the wife of Dr. Mesko, found it to be ugly, uncomfortable and with a green LED that kept her husband awake. But, at least, she had some very happy moments. This is something you will never use again.
What is the purpose of tier lists?
These lists may not be able to change the world but they can have their benefits. This structured overview of these segments could help both users and developers find practical methods to measure health. This can help us in both everyday health management as well as rare health crises.
Early digital health devices often reflected the attitude of “just because we could”, which is trivial for an industry that’s just starting to develop new technologies. As technologies and methods mature, it is ideal that devices become more refined based on feedback from users.
The Medical Futurist published the post The Ultimate Tier List of Digital Health Technologies.

What are the advances and drawbacks of holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine is a form of holistic medicine that emphasizes the importance mind, body, spirit and environment in the healing process. It was first developed by Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), and his first book, The Doctor’s Book of Mind Cure in 1924. He used simple techniques like meditation and visualization. This therapy helped patients suffering from stress, anxiety and depression as well as pain, insomnia, and other ailments. In addition, this kind of therapy helps patients cope with their problems and improve their quality of life.
Although holistic therapies are still popular, evidence is lacking to support their effectiveness. However, studies show these treatments can help to relieve chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, arthritis and other ailments.
These are the highlights and pitfalls of holistic medicine:
- Lack of scientific evidence. A small number of well-designed randomized controlled trials, (RCTs), evaluate the health benefits of holistic treatments. The majority of researches show positive results.
- Alternative medicine is less expensive than conventional medicine. Some alternative medicines are cheaper than traditional ones, especially when the patient follows a natural diet.
- Patients are not under any pressure to adhere to the prescribed protocol.
- Many doctors recommend complementary treatment, but they don’t prescribe them.
- Many holistic therapies can be used alongside conventional medicine. For example, acupuncture is usually done along with medication or surgery.
- People believe that alternative treatments work better than conventional medicine.
- Alternative medicines are more natural than traditional drugs.
- Many patients use complementary treatments to complement their lifestyle changes. They want to be healthy but also want to enjoy their lives.
- Patients who follow holistic treatments tend to be healthier.

- Research on complementary treatments is still needed.
- Studies have shown that the majority of people would rather try alternative treatments than see a doctor.
- Doctors need to understand that not all patients will benefit from alternative treatments.
- Holistic treatments should be part of our culture and education system.
- Holistic treatments may not be safe for all.

Holistic Medicine – A Short History
Holistic medicine focuses on the whole person and not just their symptoms. Holistic medicine includes all aspects of a person’s life, including their physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, occupational and cultural influences. It emphasizes prevention rather than cure and aims to prevent disease through diet, exercise, relaxation, stress management, etc.
Bastyr University, Seattle was the first school to offer holistic medicine. It was founded in 1972. After the 1996 publication of “Spontaneous Healing,” Dr. Andrew Weil’s book, holistic medicine began to take root. In 1997, the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) was founded by Dr. David Williams and Dr. Michael Murray. There are hundreds of holistic medicine programs worldwide today, including Bastyr University (Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons), Maharishi Ayurveda Institute and Pacific School of Oriental Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine is also available.
Holistic medicine was named by the World Health Organization as one of the five most important trends in healthcare. This trend seeks to integrate conventional healthcare with complementary therapies, such as homeopathy, acupuncture and massage therapy. This integration is designed to deliver safe, effective, patient-centered healthcare while minimising side effects and costs.
Holistic medicine works as a result of an interconnected mind-body-spirit. Instability can result in illness if any of these parts is not in balance. Here are some examples:
You become tense and out of balance when your mind is stressed or anxious. Cortisol is a hormone which increases inflammation. It causes fatigue, weakness, and even sickness.
When your emotions run high, you experience negative thoughts and feelings like anger, fear, grief, and sadness. These feelings cause stress in your brain. If left untreated, this stress causes your body to produce adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and heart rate. Cortisol affects your immune system, digestive tract, and nervous system. Both hormones can cause fatigue and muscle tension, headaches as well as dizziness.
A depressed spirit can lead to a loss of faith and hope. You may also lack self-esteem and confidence. This can lead to poor eating habits, unhealthy relationships, and low energy. When your spirit is healthy, you feel happy, joyous, peaceful, and optimistic.
There is a difference between alternative and allopathic medicine
Allopathic medicine is founded on science. Doctors use laboratory tests, x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, and other technologies to diagnose patients. They may also prescribe medications or surgery if necessary. Allopathic doctors believe they know what is happening inside the human body and how to treat illnesses. Alternative medicine involves herbs, vitamins minerals, diet, exercise and spiritual healing. Alternative medicine is not defined in a standard way. Some people call it natural medicine, integrative medicine, and complementary medicine. Other names include traditional medicine and naturopathic medicines.
