We often share snippets of our vision for the future of healthcare on The Medical Futurist site. We see healthcare as seamless, invisible and preventive in this vision, which we call a utopia. COVID-19 helped us get closer to our vision (telemed solutions, robots to AI), and doctors felt the need to make changes. It’s not always as simple as it seems.
Digital health is really simple. It’s healthcare that uses technology to improve the lives of patients and doctors. It is as simple as it can be. However, it covers a wide range of science, from wearables, patient data, robotics, and genomics. In 2017, we published in a peer-reviewed paperback. It stated that advanced medical technologies, disruptive innovation, and the provision of best-practice healthcare have become interdependent.” Healthcare must be transformed. It is a complete cultural and physical transformation for the entire healthcare sector. (Click here to view our infographic about the future healthcare. You already knew this.
The AMA Report
In 2016, the American Medical Association conducted a study about physicians’ expectations and motivations for adapting digital clinical tools. It then repeated the experiment in 2019 and 2022.
The third study, 2022, shows that doctors are increasingly seeing a clear advantage in digital tools. This is true regardless of gender, speciality, or age.
However, the enthusiasm for virtual visits is not evenly distributed. Although virtual visits have seen a significant increase in popularity over the last three years, this enthusiasm has remained relatively stagnant for other digital solutions such as remote monitoring and management, clinical decisions support, patient engagement, and so forth.
It is safe to say that these results reflect the aftermath of the pandemic. COVID-19 forced doctors to adopt telehealth solutions. Doctors learned the benefits of remote healthcare during this period.
Some 93% of doctors claimed that they have seen some (49%) and definitive (44%) benefits from digital health tools by 2022. It shows steady growth from one survey to the next. In 2016, it was 85% and in pre-pandemic 2019, 87%.
The survey has provided new options for answering questions that have changed the motivations for enthusiasm. These two factors were cited by 88% of physicians as the most important.
#Wearenotwaiting
Patients are not content to sit on the sidelines. Patients took control of their lives and began to take action. The diabetes community is one of the most impressive examples of participatory activism’s success. It was the first to organize itself in the digital revolution. They began to develop platforms and apps and then gathered under the #wearenotwaiting banner. Others wanted to follow and today, pioneers such as Lucien Engelen or ePatient Dave are leading the patient movement.
Patients became actively involved in their treatment and companies realized they needed to take action. The development of digital health solutions, such as wearables, artificial organs and medical tricorders, began to gain momentum and funding. Companies didn’t hesitate, as patients couldn’t wait.
Even regulators followed this flow. In 1996, the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was passed. These laws established policies and procedures regarding privacy and security of personal health data. The FDA approved the GlukoWatch, a non-invasive automatic glucose monitoring system in 2001.
Barriers to the Digital Switchover in Healthcare
The 20th century saw a dramatic shift in the work of doctors. Today, medical professionals spend far too much time on paperwork. Poor electronic interfaces. They have far too little time for patients. They are responsible for all of it. These are not the working conditions you dream of.
There’s more. They are not the only ones who benefit from technological innovations. Even if it were, it would be expensive, hard to implement (like AR), or difficult to use. Even if the idea is sound, it would only be possible to use them by a few highly-skilled and financially stable doctors. These technologies are still a strong belief at TMF. We have included a whole range of AR possibilities in this article, and also introduced extended reality use cases in this one.
What is really needed for doctors to jump on?
It is fascinating to see how the same AMA report would appear if it was conducted in 2025. Doctors have, in some cases, missed the connection despite the growth of remote healthcare solutions. It wasn’t their fault. For example, they have never been ready to move forward.
When considering digital tools, it is important to consider the obstacles that doctors may face. They were not prepared for it. Only a few courses are available that train medical professionals to adapt to digital changes. This includes my two courses.
Top Incentive Options
The study results showed that the AMA recognized the need for support and created a list of key steps and best practice guidelines for doctors on their website. There are many incentives that can, should, and will support the digital shift to healthcare. Here are our thoughts on the matter.
1. Learn from Empowered Patients
We believe that patients empowerment, digital health, digital approaches, and the fact digital medicine has become a mainstream concept have created a new role in physicians’ lives. The job will become more fulfilling and creative, and doctors will have the opportunity to practice medicine in a way that is unique. It is easier to do so in areas where there is a close relationship, such as primary care.
What is needed to do this?Real world examples and partnerships. Digital doctors such as Bryan Vartabedian, my GP, and Dr. Reka Vernes are a shining example. Excellent cooperation between doctors, patients and e-patients is possible.
2. Government incentives through healthcare policies
In order to bring healthcare into the 21st century, it is crucial that governments provide direct support. For example, take a look at the Danish Digital Health Strategy. This is one of the most innovative examples of a government-supported goal, changing patients’ and doctor’s lives for the better. They have full access and control over their medical data. The government also handles all medical data. This is a country that enjoys the highest level of citizen trust (not inseparably). The DiGA system in Germany is another great example.
How can you achieve this?
Each government offers incentives to physicians who work in this area.
3. Guidance from Medical Associations As Motivation
The AMA is a major medical organization that plays a significant role in professional motivation. Their guidelines for AI use for physicians set a high standard for doctors. Among other goals, the AMA encouraged doctors to participate in the development and implementation of AI in healthcare. They also wanted physicians to educate patients and doctors about the limitations and potential uses of AI.
How can you achieve this?
Evidence. Motivation can be found in publications, guidelines issued by professional organizations or government bodies.
4. Work Conditions Significantly Improved
It is very time-consuming to type memos about patient-doctor encounters. Digital technology can help doctors save time and reduce administrative tasks. Voice-to-text technology based on artificial intelligence can be a great help. The voice assistant interprets the text and puts it into the appropriate columns of the EHRs. Doctors will be able to spend more time on their patients and have a more fulfilling workday. They will be able provide better care, spend more time with patients, and share some of the responsibility. They could also focus on what they have the most expertise for: treating patients with empathy and care.
How can you achieve this?
Accessible digital tools, such as voice-over text solutions and support systems, as well as platforms that allow for learning and sharing of experience.
5. Accept the use of AI and digital health
Digital health is a cultural shift in healthcare. It is already happening and will not stop. Every day new devices and solutions are introduced. Although I have repeatedly stated that AI (and digital tools for health) won’t replace doctors, I stand by my belief that doctors who use these tools will replace those that don’t.
Keep your eyes open, see this as an opportunity and not a threat. Doctors will be able to provide better care if they are familiar with digital health devices and algorithms.
How can you achieve this?
Doctors need to focus on the changing situation of their patients and the team members they are working with due to the advent of new technology. It is not about which device or technology we should use. It is important to have a broad understanding of the revolution. It is worth taking courses to learn more about the topic, and familiarizing yourself with the “minimal package” that all doctors must understand about AI.
This vision is possible. Let’s make this a reality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Alternative methods are used by people with cancer.
Cancer patients are often faced with many challenges when they try to find ways to cope with their illnesses. Many patients feel defeated and hopeless. Patients may experience pain, nausea, fatigue, lack of appetite, loss of strength, etc.
In addition, conventional treatments are often not effective against cancer cells. Patients with cancer should look into alternative treatments, such as complementary medicine. A majority of cancer patients will use alternative medications at least once during treatment according to research.
Cancer patients sometimes choose complementary medicine instead of chemotherapy because they think it will be easier to handle side effects. Also, they may prefer it because it costs less.
There are also other reasons.
Some patients believe that natural remedies can help prevent a recurrence.
Many believe natural remedies can improve quality of life.
Some believe natural remedies can lower the chance of developing cancer again.
People concerned about possible side effects of chemotherapy use natural remedies as first-line therapy.
What is the alternative to holistic medicine?
Holistic medicine examines the whole person and all its aspects. Holistic medicine is based upon the belief that all illnesses must have multiple causes. Therefore, it requires a combination treatment to maximize effectiveness.
Holistic medicine is a form of holistic medicine. They believe prevention is better than treatment. To help patients achieve optimal health, they work closely with them.
They are trained to spot the root causes and prevent future disease. Holistic physicians consider the entire body and not merely the physical organs. They refer to the whole of being as “the entire body.”
This means that they go beyond skin care and treat the entire body holistically. The doctor may recommend changes to your diet, exercise, or life style. He may also recommend yoga and meditation, herbal supplements or massage, acupuncture treatment, or alternative medicine.
What Is Alternative Medicine?
This approach to healing focuses on prevention and not treatment. It encourages consumers to become educated and active in improving their well-being.
Alternative medicine refers generally to any form of diagnosis or treatment that does away with allopathic (conventional), medical approaches.

How do you find a holistic doctor?
Specialists are the best doctors. Holistic medicine is what we are referring too. This means that doctors must know how to treat their patients holistically, which includes treating them as a whole person rather than just their symptoms. You should be able to explain your holistic health to them and why you would like to see a holistic physician.
The doctor should be able to understand holistic health as well as complementary and alternative therapies (CAM), such chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture.
Holistic health practitioners should also be able to diagnose your condition and explain the different treatments available to make an informed decision about your treatment options.
Also, ask if the doctor holds certifications from professional associations such as the American Holistic Medical Association and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork. NBOHMCA certification is available in many areas, such as naturopathic, acupuncture or homeopathy, clinical nutritional, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and clinical nutrition.
You can search our directory for holistic practitioners in your local area. You may be able search online to find a holistic physician near you if there aren’t any listed.
To confirm if holistic healthcare is offered, contact your local hospital.
