In the United States, heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and woman. According to the CDC, cardiovascular disease will cause around 697,000 deaths in 2020. The common misconception is that cardiovascular disease affects males more than females. In reality, over 45% percent of all deaths are caused by heart disease. Men are often screened for heart disease because they know the statistics. However, only half of women are aware that heart disease can affect them in the same way!
Heart disease is a term that covers a variety of heart conditions, the most common one being coronary artery diseases. This umbrella also includes diseases like arrythmias (inconsistent heartbeats), heart valve dysfunctions, diseases of the heart muscle, such as cardiomyopathy and atherosclerosis.
Causes
Heart disease is caused by three different responses: oxidative stress and immune dysfunction. Although the list of causes is not short, focusing on your foundational health will help you address most of those triggers. Heart disease is caused by central obesity, diabetes and poor diet. Other causes include a sedentary life style, excessive alcohol consumption, chronic stress, and a poor diet. Poor dental health is another cause that’s often overlooked but equally important. Sleep apnea, other sleep disorders, dehydration and chronic infections, hormonal imbalances, environmental toxins or heavy metals toxicity, as well as poor gut health are all causes of heart disease. Unaddressed, all of these factors can cause excessive inflammation, oxidative damage to the blood vessel lining, and immune dysfunction that leads to heart disease.
Inflammation is a group of changes that occur in tissue when the immune system is activated by pathogens or toxic chemicals. It can also be caused by trauma, overuse, or environmental agents. This is the very first change in tissue that occurs, before any heart disease process takes place. Inflammation doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Our body would not be able heal from illness, scratches on the skin or even exercise without inflammation. Inflammation is a problem when it occurs repeatedly or over a long period of time, like smoking or eating fast food every day for lunch. Chronic inflammation can weaken the tissue’s healing ability and lead to cardiovascular diseases if it is not addressed.
Oxidative Stress is caused by a balance between the production of ROS and their accumulation, and the production of antioxidants that neutralize them. The body produces reactive oxygen species during the metabolism process (energy creation). However, exposure to radiation, heavy metals, environmental toxins and increased blood sugar, among other factors, can dramatically increase ROS levels. To combat the normal ROS, our cells have enzymes that produce antioxidants. However, these processes need specific vitamins and minerals to be co-factors. The lining of blood vessels is damaged by excessive oxidative stress, which exposes them to ROS. This can cause arterial wall accumulation and contribute to the progression of cardiovascular diseases.
Immune Dysfunction (separate Article) occurs when the immune system does not work as it should. Overactivity, underactivity and sensitivity are all examples of immune dysfunction. When discussing the function of the immune system, we must consider the following: exposure to antigens and triggers, availability of building block to create immune cells and signalers; co-factors required for proper function (vitamins and minerals); the down-regulation mechanism and the ability to repair and recover tissue. Chronic inflammation can result if the immune system fails to function in one of these areas. Chronic inflammation, particularly atherosclerosis, is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases.
Symptoms
The majority of people are aware that if they experience chest pressure or pain, they should seek immediate medical attention to rule out heart attacks. Some people may ignore less obvious symptoms, leading to a late diagnosis and bad outcomes.
Other signs and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases:
- Neck and upper back Pain
- Jaw pain
- Cold sensations in the arms or legs
- Shortness of breath when doing low-intensity activities such as walking or household chores
- Walking with a cramp in the calves
- Leg weakness or fatigue
- Female sexual arousal disorder or erectile dysfunction
- Elevated Resting Heart Rate
Diagnostic Tests
It is important to know the difference between endpoint and biomarker tests when discussing heart health. Biomarker tests are a vital tool for prevention, early detection and risk stratification in heart disease. A biomarker, which is commonly measured in the blood and is indicative of the current state of the body’s functioning, is a chemical compound. Biomarkers like hemoglobin A1c, blood glucose and insulin can be used to detect blood-sugar dysregulation before diabetes develops. These numbers can indicate that your body is heading in the wrong direction. In order to prevent diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, it is important to focus on stress management and dietary changes.
Omega-3 Index is another useful biomarker to stratify risks. Omega-3 fatty acid, like EPA and DHA play a crucial role in inflammation control and cell membrane health. Healthy omega-3 status can reduce factors such as inflammation that cause cardiovascular disease. It has also been shown to slow the progression of cardiovascular disease if it is diagnosed.
As we have already mentioned, heart disease is caused by three different responses: inflammation, immune dysregulation, and oxidative stress. By talking with your doctor about biomarkers that are related to these responses, you can improve your overall health and guide your lifestyle to support heart disease healing.
Endpoint testing can be used to diagnose heart disease and monitor its progression. The diagnostic tests for heart diseases will differ depending on the initial symptoms or the type of heart disease that has been diagnosed. Blood tests and electrocardiograms (ECG or EKG) are the most common tests to diagnose acute cardiovascular symptoms. Blood tests can be used to measure the amount of damage caused by a damaging event such as a cardiac attack. Electrocardiograms are in-office tests that attach wires to specific points on the chest and arms. This test is used to diagnose heart attacks and irregular heartbeats (arrythmias) by reading the electrical impulses from the heart.
If coronary artery diseases are suspected, a test for calcification of the coronary arteries can be useful. This test uses computerized tomography to detect calcium deposits in the arteries of your heart. The higher the score is, the greater the chance of a heart attack and the likelihood of a narrowing of the arteries.
Your provider may recommend an Echocardiogram if they suspect that the heart valves are dysfunctional or if the contraction strength is a concern. The echocardiogram uses ultrasound to visualize the heart valves. It can also be used to check if the blood is flowing through the chambers properly.
It is great to have diagnostic testing available, but it should not be viewed as the only factor when assessing cardiovascular health.
Diet
You are what you eat. If you consume poor-quality fats, you will have cells that contain poor-quality fats. The food we eat on a regular basis can have a positive impact on our heart health. It is easy to do, but often overlooked. A study from 2020 found that more than two thirds of all heart-related deaths can be attributed to poor food choices. Once you have mastered healthy, nutrient dense additions to your diet, choose another area of focus. Add two portions of non-starchy veggies to each meal. Vegetables contain antioxidants that help neutralize oxidative stresses, which is one of the major causes of heart disease. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar levels by slowing the absorption in the intestines of carbohydrates. They are also a source of food for healthy bacteria in our intestinal tract. The vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that are good for the heart, including magnesium, potassium and folate.
Another fundamental change is to eliminate sources of inflammatory fats from the diet. Change the oils that you use to cook. Choose anti-inflammatory oils like avocado or olive oil instead of inferior oils such as canola, corn, peanut and seed oils. Unsaturated fats, like those in olive and avocado oil, help lower total and LDL levels of cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease. Unsaturated fats also play a role in increasing cell membrane fluidity, which increases artery elasticity. Arterial rigidity is a predictor of heart diseases and can contribute to high blood pressure. By ensuring you consume an adequate amount unsaturated fats and reducing the intake of low-quality saturated fats, you can improve your overall cardiovascular health.
Exercise
The average American spends 12 hours a day sitting down. Sedentary people are 147% more likely to suffer a heartattack. Let’s start with the basics. Movement is beneficial in many ways that we cannot discuss here. Exercise can be divided into two categories: aerobic and anaerobic. Each has its own benefits. You should incorporate both aerobic and anaerobic exercises into your daily routine if you want to improve your cardiovascular fitness.
Aerobic exercise involves a steady movement that relies on oxygen from your breathing. This category includes walking, running and other activities like swimming, cycling and rowing. Aerobic exercise increases antioxidant enzymes, lowers both systolic (high blood pressure) and diastolic (lower blood pressure), and increases nitric-oxide production. The body’s main function of nitric oxide is vasodilation. This involves expanding the blood vessels to increase oxygen and circulation.
Anaerobic exercises are a type of exercise that uses the stored energy (carbohydrates in the muscles) to power the exercise. This type of exercise includes weightlifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), Pilates and yoga, as well as other types of strength training. Anaerobic exercises have been shown to reduce body mass index (BMI), blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Engaging the muscle fibers while exercising is the only way to take glucose (sugar from the blood) completely independently of insulin. Exercise can help lower blood sugar levels naturally! To improve cardiovascular health, 30 minutes of anaerobic and aerobic exercise is recommended five days a week.
Stress
No one is surprised that most Americans are stressed out. Stress is a major problem in our country. We tend to ignore the harmful effects stress has on our body, especially our cardiovascular system. Our adrenal glands release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol in response to mental, emotional, or chemical stressors. These hormones signal an increase in blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and shallow breathing, as well as a decrease in digestion. The body would return to balance if the stressor was removed. We know that stressors are a constant in our modern world. The cycle continues as one stressor is replaced by another. The result is a population that has high blood pressure, low oxygen delivery, an elevated resting heartbeat, hormone imbalances, and poor nutrition. For a healthy heart, stress relief techniques such as mediation, prayer, light exercise, deep breathing and stretching can be added to daily routines.
Sleep
The first question everyone should ask is “Do I wake up feeling rested most days?” If you answer no, then something must be done. Sleep apnea, if left untreated, increases the risk for heart failure by 140%. It also increases the risk for coronary heart disease 30%. Sleep is essential for the cardiovascular system. This fact alone should be enough to convince you. Our body can decrease inflammation, clean up affected tissues, increase the production of antioxidants, and regulate immune system signals during sleep. All three responses that lead to heart disease are addressed.
First, you should rule out sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. To improve your sleep , you should consider these factors: regularity of sleep, temperature, darkness of the room, location of wakefulness and food intake. For a good night’s sleep that will benefit your heart, you should spend 7-9 hours in a cool, dark room.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure is the most common cause of heart disease. High blood pressure is linked to heart failure, atrial flutter, chronic kidney diseases, heart valve disease, aortic syndroms and dementia. High blood pressure can cause excessive stress to the heart muscles, which may lead to inflammation. The shear force can cause damage to the heart valves, aorta and other organs. High blood pressure may also cause damage to small blood vessels and capillary beds. These are the places where oxygen and nutrients are exchanged, and this is why it’s linked with dementia and chronic kidney diseases. In order to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is important to address the cause of high blood tension.
Supplements
Electrolytes
The minerals that have a positive charge or a negative charge are called electrolytes. Electrolytes are essential for many bodily functions including heart contraction. A high-quality electrolyte that does not contain added sugars or cane sugar is an excellent way to maintain healthy blood viscosity, controlled heart muscle contractions and fluid balance.
CoQ10
CoQ10, an antioxidant that is naturally produced in the body, has been shown by studies to diminish with age. Statins and other cholesterol-lowering drugs shut down this enzyme, forcing your body to depend on dietary sources of CoQ10 or supplements. CoQ10, a low-risk, proven supplement, can be taken by anyone, whether or not they are taking statins. It has been shown to improve energy production in the heart muscle and reduce oxidative stresses. CoQ10 helps produce energy through a process that occurs within the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells. CoQ10 has a high nutritional value because the heart contains more mitochondria than any other organ in the body.
Omega-3 Acids (EPA and DHA)
High quality fatty acid are important for heart health, as we have discussed. Omega-3 fatty acid from algae and fish sources has been shown to improve arterial flexibility, reduce LDL, reduce inflammation markers, and improve the cell-to-cell communication which decreases naturally with age.
Heart Healthy Lifestyle
We’ve discovered that the cardiovascular system is affected daily by everything we do – eating, sleeping, exercising, hydration and stress. Before diving into specifics, it’s important to establish the basics. This includes sleeping 7-9 hours a night, eating a diet rich in nutrients, drinking half of your body weight, exercising for at least 150 minutes a week, stress management and creating a supportive community. Find a provider that listens and guides you to your heart health goals.

What does holistic really mean?
Holistic refers to being whole-based. Holistic refers to looking at the whole picture, not just one part. This can be hard because we are used seeing things as parts.
We tend to think in terms of black and white. In reality, there are infinite shades of grey.
You should always see the project from many angles when working on it. Look at it from all sides.
Take the time to look at it as a whole. Is there a way for its elements to interact?
If you do find a problem, try to figure out why. Remember to think about the consequences of any changes you make.
What are some examples of alternative medicine?
Alternative medicine is a treatment that does not fit the criteria of mainstream medicine. These include traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), homeopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture as well as nutritional therapy such like reiki.
Alternative medicine may also include practices that are not supported by scientific evidence but have been used with great success in clinical practice. Meditation, yoga, aromatherapy and reflexology are some examples.
What are the health benefits of complementary and alternate medicine?
Complementary or alternative medicine (CAM), is a general term that covers medical practices that people use when they feel they don’t get enough from allopathic medicines. These include herbal medicines, mind-body therapies such as acupuncture, massage therapy, homeopathy, chiropractic care, traditional Chinese medicine, biofeedback, hypnosis, and spiritual healing. Because they don’t fit within the traditional medical system of diagnosis or treatment, CAM practitioners often choose to use “alternative” treatments. Many CAM therapies include elements of conventional medicine. Some forms, such as acupuncture with needles, involve heat and moxibustion.
Some CAM therapies can help with anxiety, stress management, pain relief, relaxation, sleep disorders, insomnia, and stress management. They can improve your well-being, reduce fatigue, and may even help you feel more energetic. Some CAM therapies are used to treat specific conditions, including fibromyalgia. Other CAM therapies might be more enjoyable.
There is no definitive definition of CAM. However, most definitions include at a minimum one of the following:
- A holistic perspective that looks at the whole person, including body, mind as well as spirit and environment.
- The belief in mind-body interaction and influence
- The belief that illness can be caused by an imbalance in the environment or between the individual and his/her environment
- A treatment that focuses on the whole person instead of just the symptoms
- Combination between Eastern philosophy and Western science
- Methods that treat mind, body, spirit in a holistic way
- Use natural products over synthetic chemicals
- Touch of healing
- Mindfulness
- Meditation
- Acupuncture
- Yoga
- Herbal remedies
- Homeopathy
- Chiropractic care
- Massage therapy
- Hypnotherapy
- Spiritual healing
- Biofeedback
- Nutritional counseling
- Energy healing
There are potential risks to certain CAM therapies, in addition to the potential benefits. Incorrectly used, certain CAM therapies could cause serious harm and even death. Some may have side effects that should be weighed against the potential benefits. Before you make a decision about whether to try any CAM, it is important that you discuss the issues with your doctor.
Can a holistic physician write prescriptions for me?
Holistic medicine is based upon the belief that all diseases can be caused by a combination factors. This includes diet, lifestyle, environment stress, stress, emotions, genetics and other health-related issues.
These variables should be considered when prescribing medication to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
A physician must be able to understand both modern science and traditional methods like herbs and homeopathy in order to understand the effects of each factor on a patient.
Many doctors are certified to practice complementary and alternative medicine (C&A). This allows them the ability to offer a wide variety of services to their clients.
