Popular and widely used text-to-image AI generators such as Midjourney, DALL–E or Stable Diffusion have been in use for the past year. These algorithms are not perfect, but they can produce stunning images if you provide the right prompts. This one, created by Midjourney, even won an art award.
This raises so many interesting questions and sparks intense debate. AI won't replace artists. AI won't replace doctors, I'm not one of them. These tools are easy to use, so you can experiment with them to see how difficult it is to get the algorithm to draw a picture that looks like the one that won the blue ribbon for digital arts. Vision is required to find these prompts.
This is not the subject we are actually discussing. I wanted to see if these generators could come up with viable product designs for various digital health products. Are they able to come up with new ideas and revolutionary concepts?
The short answer is that they are not very likely, but they may offer some interesting ideas. As illustrated here, the first step in the design process is to create a sketch that is sleek and appealing for the product.
The Good
Let's begin with the best examples. Midjourney tested 11 different design options and came up with five that I believe are better than the current market.
-
Wearable health sensor that patients can wear on their chest
Midjourney envisioned something similar to a 6- or 12-lead ECG line when she looked at the output images. You can see that the design is simple and can be worn for long periods of time.
-
A smartwatch which can continuously measure blood glucose
These designs are appealing for many reasons, even though they aren't as revolutionary as smartwatches. The algorithm created large displays that can display a lot of information. This is a very important feature for a device like this. It is also obvious from the new models being released. These are also non-invasive gadgets. This is certainly the case with watches that measure blood glucose.
-
Doctors can use a digital stethoscope to listen to the sounds of the heart
Although these digital stethoscopes aren't significantly different from other models, I like the design details: the incorporation of the heart shape is cool and the three first images show it in a way that will likely not hinder usability.
-
A 3D Bioprinter Device that can produce living tissue
These images are my favorite because the algorithm is able to separate from the idea of printing whole organs, which is the classic “bioprinting” image burned into our retinas. The reality is likely to be much closer to these images than the illusions: printing tissues in liquid (as opposed a scaffold).
-
A smartwatch for fitness that helps patients stay healthy
There is nothing groundbreaking, but solid design. You won't be shocked to find these smartwatches on shelves in stores. Existing smartwatches have a variety of functions and design features. The looks are just the beginning. However, I liked what AI did here.
The Bad
-
A headband for patients to monitor their sleep quality and improve it
These devices have many problems. Two of these designs aren't able to measure your sleep quality. None of these designs look comfortable. Unrelated comment
-
The sleep sensor is placed under your mattress to determine your sleep quality
Oh, boy. The algorithm doesn't know what this is. There is a bed with a mattress, but no sensor. The second image shows something, but it's utterly useless. It has the same thickness as the mattress and nearly the same size. It is impossible to fit it under your mattress and then sleep on top. The rest of it is worse and the lights below the beds are even worse. Ask your spouse to clarify this midjourney and give it another shot.
-
A wireless sensor that measures blood glucose continuously
Current sensors are far better than any of them. Midjourney's output can be bulky and too big to be worn constantly, but the third image looks cool. We may have reached the peak design of current skin sensors. AI cannot improve them.
And the Ugly…
-
Continuously measuring blood pressure
What is a toaster? After seeing these images, several members of the team were unsure. They didn't see the wearable blood pressure monitors in these designs. The algorithm completely missed the point. Midjourney is fair. I tested the same prompt with Open AI’s DALL–E2 and with Stable Diffusion, and both performed significantly below what we see.
-
The medical device for practical medicine today
This is not a modern design for a multifunctional medical device. Even though I love the Star Trek vibes they have, they are all very old-fashioned. These may bring back memories of your grandma's old radio or cassette player, but they aren't as revolutionary as a digital health device.
-
A skin temperature sensor that measures body temperature. Photorealistic design
They are useless and unsuitable for body temperature measurement. However, one could argue for the prolonged use of such gadgets in clinical settings. These images are not as comfortable and smaller than the existing solutions.
Is it possible to create the square wheel?
Sometimes it is difficult to be realistic about these new AI technologies. These examples show how difficult it can be to use these AI technologies for creating something truly original. You may come up with some new ideas, but it takes a lot of digging. Even more, AI may come up with something completely different.
Some digital health products/devices have found their “optimal” design, which I think is a good thing. For example, wearable glucose sensors seem to have evolved into highly functional forms – perhaps this is the end for their design journey. Others devices, such as a wearable blood pressure monitor, are still in the process of becoming functional. It won't surprise me if companies use these AI tools to collect inspiration. But, we are far from AI designing the new devices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is holistic healing better?
Holistic health care treats the whole person instead of just specific symptoms. This means looking at how someone feels, what they eat, where they live, how much stress they are under etc…
Holistic medicine takes into account all aspects of a patient’s life and treats them like a whole package. Although it may sound easy, in practice this is difficult because doctors tend to focus only on the physical aspect of patients.
What is the difference between holistic and alternative medicine?
Holistic medicine addresses the whole person, including mind, body and spirit. It examines all aspects that affect a person’s overall health. These include the psychological, spiritual and environmental factors often overlooked in traditional medicine. Alternative medicine can be used to treat certain conditions like asthma, allergies, arthritis, or other medical issues.
Can a holistic practitioner write prescriptions?
Holistic medicine is based upon the belief that all diseases can be caused by a combination factors. This includes diet, lifestyle, environment stress, stress, emotions, genetics and other health-related issues.
These factors are important to consider when prescribing medications. This is part of a balanced approach to treating patients.
To fully grasp the effect of each factor on a patient, a physician must have a good understanding of both modern science as well traditional methods such a homeopathy or herbs.
Many doctors are certified to practice complementary and alternative medicine (C&A). This allows doctors to offer a broad range of services to their patients.

What products can be used in holistic medicines?
It would be best to describe these products as “natural”, but not necessarily organic. These products could have been grown naturally without pesticides or fertilizers. But they were also processed in a way that is safer for your health. Some herbs can cause allergic reactions and may need to have different preparations depending on the individual. Health food stores sell herbs that are more uniform than those in grocery stores. These herbicides and/or fungicides are often higher in the latter.
Herbal supplements are often made from dried herbs. Many people prefer to buy herbal supplements in liquid form. This is cheaper. But this does not mean they are less safe. Liquid herbs can lose nutrients during processing. The product may lose its original potency. A majority of herbal supplements aren't subject to quality control testing before being sold.
After cooking, herbs and spices can be added to foods. These condiments include ketchup and mustard, salad dressings, barbecue sauces, soup mixtures, and marinades.
Supplements are most commonly taken orally, (by mouth). Most vitamins and minerals come in tablet form. Other vitamins and mineral are also available in capsule form.
Homeopathic remedies are highly concentrated substances made from plants, animals, minerals, or synthetics. They are meant to stimulate the body's healing mechanisms. They can be called “homeopathic”, but they don't work the same as regular medications. Instead, they act on the body's immune system to restore balance and promote wellness. Homeopathic remedies may be safe and not toxic. They are widely used in Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles in specific points along the meridians. It is based on a traditional Chinese medical theory that says there are energy channels through which life force flows. According to the theory, illness occurs when these channels become blocked. By stimulating certain points along the meridian lines with fine needles, energy flow is believed to be restored, and the body returns to normal functioning.
To correct misalignments in the bones, chiropractors manipulate the spine. American doctor Daniel David Palmer invented this technique in 1895. He claimed he could diagnose and treat diseases by manipulating vertebrae. His methods included spinal adjustments and muscle tests. He also percussion.
Chiropractic has gained popularity in recent years. Many people believe that chiropractic is better than traditional medicine to relieve back pain.
Massage therapy can be described as rubbing, tapping, tapping, or stroking muscle, joints, and other parts of the body. Massage is used to loosen tight muscles and relieve tension. Swedish massage, deep tissues, sports, reflexology, myofascialrelease, trigger point therapy and other methods are used by massage therapists.
Reflexology is an alternative medicine involving pressure applied to specific areas of the feet and hands using thumb pads, fingers, and toes. Reflexologists claim that this method stimulates the body's natural ability to heal.
Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to reduce stress, increase well-being and improve moods. Essential oils are therapeutic as their chemical makeup can benefit health conditions such arthritis treatment to headache relief. There are many kinds of aromatherapy.
Craniosacral Therapy uses gentle touch to ease pain and discomfort. Cranial refers to the skull; sacrum means “sac” in Latin, and cranial sacral therapy combines both. This therapy uses light pressure to apply pressure to specific areas on the head and neck, shoulders or arms. It also involves moving the hands around the body of the patient.
Cupping therapy involves applying cups to the skin to draw out toxins and create suction. Cupping therapy can also be combined with moxibustion (burning of herbs) or acupuncture to help detoxify.
Supplements are either oral or topical products that contain vitamins and minerals, herbs extracts, enzymes, probiotics. antioxidants, and other fatty acids. Dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA under the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act of 1995. To be sold legally, a diet supplement must meet two conditions. The first is that it must contain a dietary ingredient, which means that it must contain more than one-percent of a vitamin, mineral or herb listed on Food and Drug Administration’s Generally Recognized As Safe List. It must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices. This means it was properly manufactured.
Electrotherapy uses electrical currents to stimulate nerves and muscles. The most common form of electrotherapy is transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS). Low-level electrical pulses are delivered by TENS devices using electrodes that are placed on the skin. These pulses stimulate brain receptors that block pain signaling. Intermittential current therapy and magnetic field therapy are other forms of electrotherapy.
Energy healing is based on belief that each person has natural healing abilities. Additionally, our thoughts, feelings, and intentions have an effect on our physical and mental health. Although energy healing has been practiced since ancient days, practitioners today accept that there is more than one layer of energy. One layer is called emotional and another is mental energy. Another is called mental energy. Other energies include the physical, spiritual, chakras and vital, life force. Some believe that these energies can be connected to all of the universe. Some people claim they can heal others with the power of their mind. But, there is limited scientific evidence to support the use of energy medicine.
Energy psychology studies how human emotions impact physiological functions. Because it is less about past events than on helping clients change their behavior, energy psychology can sometimes be considered an alternative to psychotherapy. Energy psychology does not require any specific theoretical framework but draws from many disciplines, including cognitive behavioral therapy, transactional analysis, interpersonal psychoanalysis, attachment theory, and developmental psychology.
